car rentals

I am from NY and would like to travel to CA on an assignment. My car is ancient and probably couldn't make it cross-country. I was thinking about renting, but it's about $2,300 for 3 months. NOt sure if it's worth it.

Is the only option to find an assignment in a city with public transportation? It seems so limiting!

Do some research on local companies. I have been able to find an "off brand" (not Enterprise, Hertz, etc.) rental company that will give a true monthly car rental of $395/month for a compact car. With taxes, it's still only about $450. It's in the Seattle area, but I'm sure that there are other places that have something similar.

Steer clear of anywhere at an airport pick up location as they charge not only regular tax, but an airport tax which is something around 10% or more.

Have you considered shipping your car? it might be less expensive in the long run. I shipped a car once from CA to FL last year and it was 800. That was shipping with an open system, so the car was filthy by the time it got there, but it got there in one piece. Just another idea.

My company paid for my rental car for 2 of the 3 travel assignments I did in California. I still made over $30 an hour and had private housing in a 1 bedroom apartment. Don't settle for anything less! While I love working with my recruiter and think she is great- it is important to remember that if you don't work, they don't make money! I always picture her as a used-car-salesman trying to drive a hard bargain =)
