Bad credit/credit check

I was recently told by a fellow RN that often travel companies and hospitals do not only criminal background checks (which I am aware of) but also credit checks is this correct? if a RN has had late payments, foreclosure, bankrupcy does this mean they may not be extended a contract or job?

I was a recruiter for a travel nurse agency, and you can tell the agency NO when it comes to a credit check. Most of our nurses crossed it off, and wrote do not give consent for credit check.

If the agency insists, find another one. Unfortunately, many nurses especially travel nurses have credit issues, and now with the economy the way it is, I would not worry about it.

I think the credit issues come from having assignments canceled or too long of time between assignments. Or not getting paid correctly.

Take your time and find as much out about the agency as you can, and remember to keep a safety net to protect yourself.

Good Luck!

UPDATE: Since I posted this for my friend just wanted to let everyone know she is working on contract in Hawaii currently and just finished an assignment in Alaska. She did have bad credit but that did not come in to play the facilities were interested in her experience and credentials. Just thought I would update you so it does not stop anyone from pursuing your dreams of travel or contract nursing like my friend Pat.
Thanks.
