Commuter,

Wow that's good pay for your first year. I guess I shouldn't believe everything I hear. I'm honestly not trying to put anyone down. I was making $15/hr at my previous secretary job and was considering LVN school.....an LVN friend of mine told me I wouldn't even make $15/hr as a new grad. When I made that comment about LVNs not making much money....I was strictly going by what I was told. I'm truly sorry if I offended anybody.

Since you are in Lewisville have you thought about taking the LVN program at NTCT? If you take your courses at the college then your credits would probably transfer easier. I am in Lewisville also, but I am trying to get into the TCC program .

Yes I thought of NCTC but its to late to register for the fall , id have to wait for like 6 months or so ... i dont want to do all that waiting.

My update: I went to Platt to look at the school ,its ghetto very gheto, they dont make u take the NET you take some wonderlick test. It cost 25,000 which is more then concorde or Dallas Nursing Institute. So Plat is out , they were very unprofessional.

Concorde- is nice , the people seem nice its very professional , its 21,000 . zbut its just so far

Dallas Nursing Institute- is just as nice as Concorde, its very professionally ran from what i could tell , its 18,000 . Students seemed interested in learning and were professional and its not as far away as concorde. So i think im going to go to Dallas Nursing Institute

Now I have to call community colleges and see if i will be able to bridge to RN after graduating from there. I am looking to get my RN in Los Angeles plan on moving there when i graduate lvn school

Hey man... not to rain on your parade but like many people said, unless you want to work LTC, you are going to have a bit of a hard time finding a job. Id really encourage you to get into the NorthLake/El Centro program. It is not as hard as everyone says it is. You can finish all your prereqs in 1 semester so you can apply and it's a 2 year program. If you really want to push yourself, Brookhaven has a 1.5 year program for an ADN. Starting a $15-20/hr job with a $20k debt and other living bills doesnt sound like a great way to do it. Id really do this as a last resort. You can apply for federal grants. Not sure if Lewisville is Dallas County or not (think its Denton) but if it is, you can do 2.5 years of ADN at for 1/3 of what the private school will cost you and if you qualify for the grant, it is usually enough to pay for all your school.

Sometimes you have to slow down to speed up. I completely know about wanting to get out and start making money..Im 24 and hoping to start at NorthLake in the fall. A $20k loan at 9% for a private student loan is a killer.

I'd advise against DNI. too much drama, no organization, very unprofessional. I am just trying to get finished so I can bridge. via Excelsior, I think. eventually.

Methodist hires LVNs, Kindred hires LVNs, Parkland hires LVNs. LVNs do very well in dialysis. Nursing homes are not the only option.

Have you checked on Trinity Valley Community College? They offer LVN/LPN and they're located in Kaufman. It's a bit of a drive but tuition was not anywhere near 18-24 thousand. That's just insane!!!

Just another FYI...... I am attending Concord and I do find it to be a good school, yes it is expensive but for my needs it works . The instructors have been great and they are always available to offer extra help . We have many people in my class that drive from all areas ...some 30 to 45 minutes or more . Good luck in whatever you decide . ! Yes it is hard work but well worth it !

What did you decide to do? I too am looking into going to DNI. Mainly because I need to go to school at night so I can work. I can't afford to quit my job. Did you find out how much DNI costs?

I"ve been to DNI and yes it's expensive, but for me and my needs, it's the best that I can do. I want to get my LVN degree, but I don't have the time right now for all these different courses and then trying to get into school and I need something at night because I have to work full-time job. I say do whatever you think will work best for you. I have a friend that attended Concorde and she's doing great and is able to get a job anywhere! :D

Anyway, I'll be signing my contract soon with DNI and so far it's been hectic b/c of all the paperwork, etc. But I can imagine that would be pretty common anywhere else you go and have to worry about loans, I wouldn't know, first time loan gal here. LOL Anyway, good luck to all and I hope that whatever each of you choose, it's to your liking and you achieve your goal, nurse! :)
