UTMB Fall 2013

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello! I searched the site and seen no one made a topic about the people trying to enter in Fall 2013 so here is it  I am applying to UTMB for Fall 2013. I've written my personal statement and filled in the application. Now i'm waiting on nursing CAS to receive all my transcripts and to take my TEAS test on Jan. 8. I'm so nervous. How is everyone else coming along?

gfc123, I am not sure what all they look at, but I would think everything plays its little part in their reviews. I would make sure to tell them anything about yourself that makes you stand out as a prospective student.

Hi UTMB Hopefuls!

I'm Megan R, One of the upper classman at UTMB Chosen to be the Co-Leader (along with Brett N) of the Pay it Forward Mentor Program at UTMB SON! We are both very active in student organizations and leaders in our classes. Brett has even worked for UTMB and has connections with all the staff. We hope to be great resources for you in the weeks, months, and (hopefully!) years to come!

We know just how you feel right now playing the waiting game after submitting your application. We were in your shoes just this time last year. We are here to help ease your mind and help with the anxiety that comes from waiting on your letters! Please feel free to ask us questions about the process and the school of nursing. We would love to help you! Once letters go out, we have official UTMB class pages on facebook that you will be invited to join. There will be a lot of great information there about navigating UTMB life!

That being said, it sounds like Nursing CAS is giving all of you some trouble and is causing some anxiety. Our class did not have to use Nursing CAS, so I'm going to pass along your questions and try to get some answers. Paperwork is very stressful, but you want to stay on top of it. With so many applicants, all the nursing schools have trouble keeping up sometimes. UTMB is no different. Make sure to keep copies of everything and continue to check on your mystar status to make sure nothing is outstanding. If you have questions, please call the admissions department and make sure you have completed all the requirements ( but please don't call everyday - they will get back to you :)

Another important point to remember when posting on All Nurses is to keep your communication professional. These boards are monitored by staff and are completely public. Make sure to put your best foot forward!

I'm going to go back and start reading your questions from the beginning. Please be patient with us! We are already neck deep into our semester and Nursing school likes to keep you VERY BUSY :) but I wouldn't trade it for the world!!

GOOD LUCK!

Megan

Co-Leader UTMB Pay It Forward Program

For those applying for the bsn program, does anyone know if you can take your prerequisites at a community college or is it preffered that they be taken at a 4 year university. And also, does utmb accept ap credit?[/quote

4 year university credits are not weighed heavier than CC credits. I went to a 4 year university before taking CC science pre-reqs for nursing school and I thought some of the CC science classes were harder than my classes at UT Austin! :) So please don't worry if you went to CC for pre-reqs!!

Just a green circle. I figure from looking at past discussions it will be at least March before we hear a peep.

True! I would not expect to hear anything until at least March, if not later. I'll try to keep up to date on how things are coming along and give you any info I can get :)

For the bsn program, does utmb look at your volunteer experience and extracurricular activities?

YES! One of the things I love about UTMB is that they look at the 'whole student' when evaluating applications. They really do read your personal statements, so include all of your great leadership and volunteer experiences!!

Thank you for joining the conversation Megan! I am sure you will be a great resource for us all!

I am not sure if someone has asked this yet, I read through all the comments but maybe I missed it. I have completed my NCAS App, and got my letter in the mail to submit my supplemental application. So I went on the website and completed it and made my payment, it said to print the form and send it to the address listed, so I have it ready to go out in the mail. I havent' seen any guidance on how to send Teas scores, I thought there would be something on the supplemental app but there wasn't. Can anyone advise? I have everything else done just need to send my scores!

You have to do it on the ati website it's like $26.00, and yay I got my mystar information today with a green circle, can't wait till it's a green check mark! (Trying to stay positive) thanks everyone for being so supportive I know these next three to six months are going to drive us all crazy but we can get through this! :)

Thanks for the response! I found it after I made the comment, I sent it to UTMB! Congrats on your mystar info! I cannot wait to get mine! How long did it take after your supplemental application was sent? Do they wait until you mail the form to them or do they go off the electronic submission? Again sorry if these questions were all ready answered. I am so nervous, I sent in my transcript before two of my classes were over because I didn't want to wait until the end of the semester and it be too late, so I had the bare minimum number of credits to apply. NCAS has since received my updated transcript, but I am afraid its too late and UTMB wont see those extra classes! Keeping my fingers crossed though!

@Rmegster-- Do you happen to know what the lowest Teas score that UTMB has accepted within the last applicant pool? I'm so very nervous, as my Teas score was low and I feel it may affect my chances at getting in. I have already sent everything into Nursing Cas and I'm praying my personal statement stands out! I too will just have to wait and see I suppose. Any insight or opinions will be GREATLY appreciated :)

Applying to nursing schools has been the worst! I have a bachelors already (anthropology), so I'm applying to UTMB's accelerated BSN program [as well as UTHSC (first choice), TWU, UTA, TA&M corpus].

I had no idea until I stumbled upon this thread that they changed the deadline! Because I'm applying to so many schools I made a spreadsheet back in the summer with schools, deadlines, requirements, etc trying to keep it all straight, and it still says "NOV FIFTEENTH" so of course I rushed to take my exams in October and submit everything by then. I did the supplemental around the end of november. These early deadlines were driving me crazy because I took A&P II, micro, nutrition, stats and med term just this last fall, so I though I'd do all this work and they wouldn't even see the grades. ...well I was wrong. I just sent an updated transcript with this fall's grades (4 A's and 1 lousy B) to them electronically tonight... just because.

I got an email today scheduling an interview for the 24th. I guess that's good and I guess that means that I submitted enough. I wish I knew if this interview is just another step in the application process or a sign that I have a good chance so long as I don't blow it. :) I thought about making an appointment with an adviser the same day, as galveston is 2 hours away, but it seems kind of worthless, because if she tells me I need another class, when would I take it?

Does anyone know the day that classes start? All I can find is "May" but my online texas government class at lonestar ends on may 12th - Issue?

When I wrote my statement, at first I couldn't find a prompt anywhere, so I actually emailed an adviser and asked what she wanted - her response was unhelpful. Something like, "our requirements are online" so I just wrote what I thought a school would want to know and finally found the terms tonight and luckily I think I met the requirements.

I'm constantly paranoid that I'm missing some vital document or deadline for some school.

My GPA from my first degree was ok - 3.3 or something, but I wasn't planning on going back to school, so I had no motivation to strive for all A's, just do generally well. I've taken 29 hours of science preereqs this summer/fall to apply for summer/fall 2013 programs and made all A's and 1 B.

I don't like to make lame excuses but the TEAS was not a good experience. I had to drive clear across Houston in the awful morning traffic, and because of construction was actually a few minutes late - didn't think they would let me in, but security was MUCH more lax than at the HESI. I had to finish in like half the time too because USCIS decided to schedule my husbands Immigration interview (he's australian)the same day on the other side of Houston at noon and we only have the one car (he waited outside while I took the test).

I ended up doing OK anyway: 88 overall score, 98th percentile for nation.

I don't usually test well, so I'm not really sure what happened.... but can't complain.

I'm posting this because this is the stuff I wan't to know from other applicants.

Has anyone done an interview or know what to expect? I have absolutely no medical background so I'm worried that will work against me.

Thanks!

Just found the SUMMER 2013 board and re-posted there. Thought about deleting above post, but left it if anyone's interested.
