UTMB BACC2 Spring 2012

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I wanted to start a thread for those applying for UTMB's 2012 accelerated nursing program. The application is open April 1-July 15. I was told invites for interviews start after the application is closed and interviews start end July-August. Does anyone have any additional information? Has anyone applied before? Know of any interview questions? Please share everything you know!!!!!!!

Good luck to everyone

I emailed two days ago (the 13th) about my application status and within minutes I got a response saying that my application is complete, but they are still manually coding transcripts into the system, so please allow more time. So no interviews yet.

I just posted in the UTMB Traditional BSN thread that I am a reapplicant, and last year I didn't get my UTMB Bacc2 interview until Sept. 24th. Again, I think they intended the interviews to happen earlier than that, but we should probably plan for interviews around that time while hoping for earlier.

Good luck everyone! Hang tight!

Waiting is definitely not any fun. Is anyone else currently working full time?

Hurry up and wait. To those who wait, a moment seems and enternity. I am working full time and waiting......I love my job, it is the 8 hours of bordom I can't stand.

I as well am starting to freak out a little bit too, I applied and haven't heard from anyone either. I was told by the academic adviser about the interviews being in mid-end of july too.

Does anyone know what a good candidate looks like? I was told by the Academic adviser there that I had nothing to worry about with my application because it looks strong.

Thank you.

Courtney

Hi Courtney,

I was told the same thing. I'm not stressing anymore since it seems as if interviews are late every year. I was just hoping we'd hear something before I go back to work. Good luck and hang in there.

I have applied for the Spr 2012 and have not heard anything as of yet.

Thanks guys! I'm not so worried now. :)

Does anyone know what kind of applicant they are looking for? I know what it says on the website, just was curious if you guys knew anything. Like GPA, degrees, TEAS V etc...

I received my MYSTAR login online, they e-mailed it to me.

Hi everyone I am a current bacc2 student at UTMB and thought it would be helpful to ease some of your anxiety and give some advice because I know I appreciated it when some students from last year did the same for me.

First, I love the program. It seems like yesterday I was stressing about getting accepted because of the high number of applicants, but now I am finishing up my last class for the summer semester (OB) with only the fall to go. Not everyone loves the program as much as me because, well let's face it, everyone learns differently. The bacc2 program is for very independent learners. Content for each class may be in a different form. Some teachers simply post power points and assign textbook readings, others do powerpoints supplmented with audio on adobe presenter, and others may post class notes and have mp3 audio lectures. Some students do not like this because they like classroom learning. The generic has much more classroom learning and one of the generic programs is only 15 months so if you don't like the online thing or aren't very independent in your learning you may want to consider what program to go into. Of course, if you are admitted into the program and make below a 75 average in any course (especially the first semester) such as pharmacology or adult 1, you'll be dropped from bacc2 into the generic program and will not resume classes until the fall. We've had anwhere from 10-15 leave the bacc 2 program.

Working is almost not an option. There is one student who works in our program and he works very few wkend hours. I would work if our schedule was not so variable, but with clinicals and not being off the same days every week it would be hard for an employer to work with me. UTMB faculty tells you that it isn't optional and that you can't work and really you probably shouldn't.

You can just about guarantee if you get accepted to have an exam every Tuesday for a full year except for when you first begin a class or if they throw in a curve and give you one on another day instead, but for the most part they are all on Tuesday. ATI books are the best study tools in my opinion for almost all of the classes (they give these to you free of charge for each class). Except pharmacology, all you needed was the notes and audio lectures. Nursing tests are so much different than anything I had in college (my degree is Biology). All tests are situational applied knowledge. Going in depth studying is good, but not necessary to succeed on exams.

Clinical experiences are going to be where everyones experiences are different. At first they try to send you to hospitals near where you live. I live in Clear Lake area so I got sent to Memorial Hermann Southeast, most people that live on the island got a UTMB hospital, people in Houston got the Med center, etc. For classes like pedi and ob they asked us where we wanted to be placed (Texas Children's, Texas Women's, etc) and they tried to accomodate all of us. Be prepared to work NIGHTS (6:30pm-7:00am)!! Some people will get lucky and get to work some days, but most of my experiences have been at night, especially in the Med center and UTMB ( I think bc other schools/UTMB programs are there during the day).

Lastly, I applied last year the FIRST day the portal was open. I did not hear anything back besides verification that my app had been received until late August. I then had an interview on Sept 24th. I kept track of things on this site and saw that people who interviewed the same day as me were being accepted somtime in mid-Oct, but I hadn't! This freaked me out and I was very depressed because I felt very good about my interview and everything else. I called admissions several times throughout the whole process and one thing you have to remember, they are going to seem very unorganized during this whole admission process, but there are a ton of applicants and they admit a ton of people. Needless to say, I got an email saying I was accepted on Nov. 1st or 2nd and it was a very happy day! So calm down and just be very patient.

Hope I've been helpful and good luck to you all!

THANK YOU SO MUCH JThig!!! Hearing from someone who is in the process right now is great! What did you do before nursing?

Thank you so much!!!!!!! :) This is very reassuring to hear! I am so excited about this opportunity, that it's hard to wait in the meantime. :) May I ask did you have to take the TEAS-V test? What score did you get?

So most of your rotations are at night? Did I read correctly?
