Texas Tech Traditional BSN Fall 2012

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I'm totally new to this and I am amazed at all the information this web site provides! Is anyone else on here going to be applying for the TTU Traditional Nursing Program for the Fall 2012 semester? Also, I need to take intro to nursing and pathophysiology this Spring. Is it best just to take it at Tech? Any input would be most helpful! :D

The program has been pretty good so far. First semester was a breeze but second semester is THE hardest semester out of all semester. The seniors also agree with this as well. Most professors are pretty helpful except for tests lol. I remember our first test in Chronic Care (Med Surg 1), the 1st test average was a 54 and the study guided/blueprint didnt help us at all. Btw REMEMBER YOUR PATHO cuz it's going to kick your butt in second semester. But ill save the details later on and explain first semester.

First semester is pretty easy when I look back. I think the challenging part for most people is having the mentality that your a NURSING STUDENT not just a student anymore. This is where experience as a CNA or other health setting profession comes into play (but not always for some). From what I remember, here is the schedule is like

Mon and Wednesday - Lecture from 8 to 3 pm

Tuesday - Health Assessment and Communication Clinical from 8 to 3pm

Thursday and Fridays are kinda different cuz it switches off every week

One week your thurs/friday would look like this

Thurs - Clinical at the Nursing Home from 7am to 4pm

Friday - Clinical Lab for only 2 hrs depending on what time slot they assign you

Another week it would look like this

Thursday - you have Clinical Lab from 8 to 5pm

Friday - you have the day off

I say i gain the most clinical experience during my second semester. You don't get into the hospitals til the last 2 weeks. For the first semester, the 1st month was pretty easy. But once you have the first test, it is nonstop studying cuz you will have a test every week along with other assignments. Hopefully that gives you an insight of whats to come

Thank You so much! That was really helpful! I don't mind studying all the time I had to do it when I took patho and pharm together (UTA requires pharmacology before you start nursing school). So, I think as long as I have an organized study schedule and I figure out "how to study for each class" early on I will be a ok (hopefully)) :) I am working on doing an externship for 80 hours at a local hospital for phlebotomy so hopefully that will give me a little bit of experience. Oh you said your class had a test average of 54 the first time-- did that average steadily improve? I am a bit worried about remembering my patho but i saved all of my notes and lectures if i need to refresh my memory (which i most def do). This is random but do you have time for a part time job? I may have to get a job where I work just twice a week or something of that sort. I just need a little bit of money for food and living expenses, etc. So, all in all you would say that Tech has a pretty good program? I am going to be going to Lubbock the 20th so I can scope out the campus, but your input is really helpful and greatly appreciated! :)

sml0432- not sure if you read my post from earlier today. I received my offer today around 2pm and the email said I had until 4pm on April 12 to accept the offer. So approx a week.

Oh gosh only a week? I thought they used to give the students a month? Ok, no worries time to get to it then once i get my official offer! :) Thank you for the info

Hi everyone, congrats to everyone who got in, and patience for the one's who got waitlisted!!

& I also applied for the El Paso campus and have been calling every two weeks, this week they told me that they are still working on it and to expect an email in a couple of weeks. Good Luck to all!!:nurse:

Just wanted to let everyone know that we do not register for classes until orientation. I wasn't sure if that had already been clarified or not. Once they get set orientation dates we will receive another email that tells us all of the things we need to have completed before orientation (tb test, BLS, immunizations, etc). So basically we are just waiting for another email and we will register for classes at orientation in July.

Okay thanks for the information. I was really curious about that.

Thanks for giving us a heads up about what the schedule is like.

LittleMissRedRaider- Have you received your official acceptance email yet? I'm just curious because I have not.

LittleMissRedRaider-- yes I am really leaning toward tech right now! I am going to visit the school on the 20th so I will let ya know how it goes! I think I am also gonna check out some apartments around campus. IDK I just feel like Tech may be calling my name. If I decided on going we def all gotta meet up at orientation?! How far away from tech do you live? I live about five hours away :0 lol Not the most exciting drive P.S. How long did you have to accept your offer?!

Great! I checked out a few apartments last year, there are a lot. Some over the top and some just looked infested, haha. I am only looking at houses due to the extent of time living in Lubbock, my brother's program is 4 years, plus the market is VERY cheap. Hopefully, we will find property with room for a renter to aid with the house note and other expenses. As you know, I don't live there, but Tech feels like home. I love the system and cannot wait to be there! Currently, I live 8 hours away! lol Yes, its a long drive and going to be a longer move. For me the drive gets interesting around the last stretch of US-84, when the windmills start popping up! I still haven't gotten my official e-mail yet.. :uhoh21: But of course, I'll let ya know when I do!

Wow, I missed a lot of action yesterday!

Specializes in Trauma, Surgical, Burn.

The test average steadily increase but its really tough to make up for a lot of people. It's a matter on people "thinking" like a nurse that able you to do well on tests. Tbh, you dont need to know everything about patho just the basic which you will need to apply later on. I have a list of books that are really beneficial especially on tests (Kinda frustrating cuz a lot of the books they assigned weren't really helpful to handful of us)

Having a job is very manageable for the first semester but second semester is going to be really really tough. I know a few that have a job and they had a very difficult time especially having 30 hrs of clinical week along with lecture and test.

Tech is a very good program. I remember hearing from our professors that last years graduating class they had very high graduating numbers and a lot of them pass the NCLEX as well. I forgot the statistics but they said it was above 95% for both graduating and passing the NCLEX

Wow, that's a really high passing rate for the NCLEX. I'm super stoked to go to Tech and I look forward to meeting you guys!! :)

That's an awesome passing rate!! I look forward to meeting all of you as well!! :-D
