Tarrant County College fall 2013

Welcome! I thought it was time to start a new thread for TCC fall 2013 applicants and future hopefuls. I've followed the past 2 threads for TCC and there are at least a handful of us finishing up pre-requisites this summer and fall.

Feel free to join the conversation and pass the word to others.

I am down to taking my science classes before I apply to the nursing program. I go to TCC NW Campus, any suggestions on what order to take these? Science is not my strong point, but at the moment I have a 3.59 GPA. I am planning on taking A&P I Fall 12 but I'm nervous about taking any other classes on top of that. I've heard it's a beating and a TON to learn.

Hi Misty! I am taking my sciences at NW campus too. If you ask an advisor, they will likely give you different answers depending on who you speak with. I went the aggressive route and took AP 1 & Microbiology last semester. I did very well and got the grades I wanted but it was really tough. I spent about 16 hours a week on campus between classes and studying, then studied about 40 hours a week at home. We ate out way too much, my house was a wreck, and I had no social life to speak of. The first few weeks were the toughest. The first 2 weeks of AP1 are usually a review of basic biology and basic chemistry followed by a test before the first day of census so you can drop without a record of attempt if you don't do well.

If science is not a strong subject for you, I would suggest that you take AP1 and no other science classes in the same semester. If you have a family you may not want to attempt any additional classes either. It all really depends on how much time you can spend studying. The general rule is 3 hours of study for every hour of class time but every one and every situation is a little different. The skeletal system and muscular system are mostly just memorization which you will have to do mostly on your own. The Science Learning Center is a great resource. You can use the computers to work on any online components for AP, or use the models to get hands on time (they are also great study aids for your lab tests!)

One other thing to keep in mind if you are going to take AP1 in the fall is that you will probably be best to follow it with AP2 in the spring. Books change frequently. The A&P books are expensive and if you skip a semester, your book may change and then you will have to buy a different book to complete AP2. AP1 has a different book listed than we used last semester but AP2 is using the old book.

Best of luck to you. Don't forget that registration starts next Friday and AP classes/labs fill up fast so register as early as you can!

Thank you so much for your help and all the information!! I plan on registering for A&P I for Fall and A&P II Spring, but they haven't listed any professors yet for Fall and I always like to look them up on ratemyproffesor.com before I take anyone. Hopefully they will have some listed before Friday! I'm really debating taking any other science classes with this one since it will be my first science ever here at TCC. You just never know what to expect!

Some of the professors have been listed. They are hiring 2 more biology professors so the unnamed slots will now likely go to the new guys. I would love to tell you who I would recommend but the rules here won't allow it. My first name is in my user name and my last is a european country known for tulips. Email my school address if you want to know who I took.

Hello to both of you! I'm also applying for the 2013 fall admission and am finishing my sciences at NW campus. I'm taking A&P II during this summer semester and will be taking micro in the fall. A&P is definitely a lot of information but if you put the time into it, getting an A is definitely doable.

Welcome ktm! I hope AP II is going well. I loved micro. Twice a week lab wasn't that bad. Most days we got out as soon as we were done with our experiments. If you are prepared and read the instructions before lab, you will do well.

A&P is going well! I've managed to keep a high A so I'm happy, just ready for a break. It's definitely been kicking my butt but taking it this summer was totally worth it I'm excited to get started with micro. Mainly because it means that the application period is just around the corner! Did anyone go to the meeting last week regarding the RN to BSN program through Tarleton? It got me even more excited to start nursing school!

I didn't know there was a meeting or I would have been there! I was planning to bridge at UTA before the Tarleton program was in the works. Do you have any idea where I can get more information about it? I already had my spring 13 classes in mind but that was based on the UTA pre-requisites. The new program may change my plans.

Yeah, I have an information sheet I can post whenever I get to my computer!
