Relocating from Oh to El Paso

Hello everyone(or is it y'all lol) I'm a new grad LPN. Just found out hubby being transferred to Mexico (Juarez?) so we will be moving to El Paso within the next 6 months. I've been there before and I'm fine with the city and WILL NOT miss the snow. I've heard all kinds of rumors about Tx and LVN's and hope someone would be kind enough to help me figure this stuff out. I've heard Tx is the only state in the counry without a nurse practice act so how is your scope of practice defined? I've also heard anyone can do what LVNS do without a licence as long as they don't call themselves LVN. Can this possibly be true? So what exactly do you do as an LVN in texas? In Ohio our classwork does not include IV certification ,does it in TX? What about meds ? Here it is part of the program and you do not need NAPNES certification to pass meds what about TX.I dread the thought that I'm lacking something that I need to practice! If anyone is from EL Paso or knows anything about the job situation and starting pay rate I'd really appreciate hearing from you! Is hospital or LTC more abundant? Thanks for your time!!

I am not in El Paso so I can't help with specifics. I am in Texas though and we certainly do have a Nurse Pactice Act...and our BON will be the same for LPN's and RN's soon if not already.

LPN's are allowed quite a liberal practice in Texas as compared to other states. My ICU:a LPN is limited only by her choices: she can function as broad as she wishes as long as she is competent in the procedure. They have the opportunity to train for open hearts, etc if they wish.

On the general floor, LPN's do everything but charge, spike blood, and do admit assessments. Once they take an IV course they may start IV's. Some facilities limit them further according to their own policies. Maybe someone is here from the El Paso area who can give you more data on that area.

At the hospital I'm at in TX LvN's can pretty much do everything except hang blood and administer IV pushes.

i worked in one of the hospitals in el paso way back 1996 and the hospital's name at that time was columbia east. What they said (previous responses) about LVN's function is true, only thing is RNs make the admission assessments. btw, live in the west side of town...

Hello, I just want to welcome you to the hot state, lol, and hope you enjoy it here. I will first start to say that we do have a nurse practice act, and I that this will probably sound like a repear to you. But, I am going to tell you anyway, lol. I worked in Dallas, not El Paso, and I don't know much about the city or what they pay. I know my LVN friends who work in Dallas make more working agency than with the hospital but they are allowed to do everything, except hang blood and push iv meds, and depending on the charge nurse and the LVN, some would even push their own meds.

I live in El Paso and work with several LVNs. I don't know what you should expect in the hospitals, but in nursing homes, hospice, home health, etc. I would expect between $17-19 an hour. I'm a RN, so I'm not familiar with the nurse practice act for LVNs, but you won't have any problem getting a job. If you are able, you might consider living on the westside of El Paso around Redd Rd. There are couple of nice nursing homes: White Acres, Monte Vista, Desert Springs (pays less but is an Alzheimers assisted living). Also, Nazareth Hall in central El Paso is nice. Some of the places in east El Paso can get pretty nasty. Good luck!
