Relo to Dallas--HELP! :)

U.S.A. Texas

Hi there:

I am a BSN student in St. Louis, and just finishing up my first term of my part-time program (Patho and Pharm). I am expected to graduate in December of 2014.

I love my current program because it allows me to work full time, go to school 2 nights a week, and complete clinicals on Saturday.

Last week, my fiancé was informed he is likely going to have to relocate to Dallas for work. (boo! No offense, Texans..I'd even poo-poo a relo to Hawaii. St. Louis has always been my home! :) )

I don't want to have a long distance engagement. So, if he does get relocated, I will likely need to find a new school. Given I'm early into my program, I'm hoping most of my credits will transfer. I studied psychology for many years, and switched to nursing 1 semester prior to graduating. So, I have all of my gen eds completed.

Are there any BSN schools in the Dallas area you all can recommend I start looking at? I do need to work, so part-time or online is preferred. I saw Arlington has an online program, but I get the impression that it is difficult to get in if you aren't employed by one of the partner hospitals. I have experience in Human Resources/Corporate Wellness, and would love to continue that path while in school.

Any advice/recommendations would be much appreciated. I really don't want to move...but want to make the best of it and stay on track with my own career goals.

PS--We have been looking at houses online. With the tornados down there, I can't believe none of the houses have basements! Where do you ladies let your fellas have their "man caves?" His ugly furniture from college cannot go in the living room. :nono:

Specializes in Critical Care; Cardiac; Professional Development.

The soil here won't support a basement - it shifts too much. Most of the houses here have foundation problems at some point.

There aren't any night/part-time programs that I am aware of in the DFW area. Major BSN schools here include Texas Women's University, Univerity of Texas at Arlington, Baylor, TCU and probably others I am forgetting. There are a lot of ASN schools as well that then have bridge programs to BSN online.

Not sure I would want to move from St Louis to Dallas either but if you do wind up here, welcome. :)

Hello

If you are already in a nursing programe I would suggest you not to move because the nursing school here are very difficult to get in. And they would probably ask you to take some more pre-req like government and history since its mandatory in Texas school. It would be like wasting your time for more pre-req credits.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

You will not be able to attain a baccalaureate (BSN) degree here in Texas unless you have passed two specific courses: Texas History and Texas Government. In addition, the competition to get admitted into nursing programs in the D/FW (Dallas/Fort Worth) metro area is absolutely insane.

Anyhow, the D/FW area BSN programs include TCU, TWU, Southwestern Adventist, West Coast Univ, UT Arlington, and probably a couple of others that I cannot think of.

I jut graduated from TWU and worked at least part-time the entire time I was in school . If you can get a job in a hospital, you can work overnights and weekends and fit it in with your school scheduled. TWU is an amazing program with an excellent NCLEX pass rate. It is very highly respected and has a good reputation in Dallas. If you have to work full time during the week, it also has a weekend program that you go to year-round. Here's the link for pre-reqs and transfer info. BS Program Requirements - TWU College of Nursing - Texas Woman's University I would recommend contacting the academic advisor about transferring...they may be able to let you in on the condition that you take the Texas requirements. Good luck!
