Questions about Seton Versant RN Residency in Austin

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I have just been accepted into the Seton RN residency and can answer any questions you may have. I will also be creating a post throughout my experience in the residency. Ask away!

Did anyone have issues when completing the online application? I left a voicemail for the Versant office and have yet to hear back from them! On their website their FAQ says that if you have your license you don't need to upload transcript and receipt from nclex review class, however it looks like my application isn't 100% complete until I upload these documents. Also, I submitted the letters of recommendation links to my two references but my application is still only at 85% and doesn't show completion under "Letters of Recommendation." Can anyone help please???

brittanyjoseph - Same thing happened to me. My letters of recommendation were complete; I was only missing the transcript and NCLEX review d/t already having a RN license. I just went ahead and submitted even though it didn't say 100%. I didn't know what else to do. I submitted my application about a week ago and have not yet heard from HR. If they respond to your voicemail, please let me know what they say... thanks & good luck!

I know when I left the versant office a message I got a call from them by the next day. Good luck!

Okranurse: I was told it is like speed dating. Booths set up and you walk up to where ever fits your interest!

Holy cow, really? Should be interesting...

I did the open house in the spring (graduated May 2012). It's like a big career fair -- a big room with tables for different floors/departments at different facilities. You jostle your way to the front for a few minutes' worth of conversation with the hiring managers.

1. Bring lots of copies of your resume. I think I gave out at least two dozen.

2. Get the contact info (email especially) for everyone you talk to.

3. Be able to summarize your interest in the SPECIFIC floor/position and your SPECIFIC qualifications in 30 seconds or less. Make a strong impression but don't be conversational quicksand, because the managers will totally tune you out.

4. The day after the open house, send emails to everyone you talked with. Thank them for their time, make reference to specific things you discussed with them (i.e. "I really appreciated how your floor uses self-governance to accomplish its goals, and I'd love to talk about it with you in more detail.") Be specific and be memorable.

In the past, "routing" your app to facilities didn't necessarily mean anything. They basically all just sat in no-man's land there. I'm not sure if that's still the case, but it wouldn't surprise me. The key to getting an interview is impressing people at the open house. After the event, the different hiring managers will pull the applications from people they liked and want to interview. During the open house, you might catch people putting stars on your resume or making notes to themselves -- that's a good sign that you'll be getting a call.

In the end, after interviewing for a Versant position, I chose another system/facility. But my friends who did Versant have been very happy with it.

Sorry to give drive-by advice, but I've gotta get to work. ;-) Good luck, y'all!

Purkinje: Thanks for the awesome painted picture! :) greatly appreciated!! And I agree with the resume part I already have like 50 printed out and ready to be dispersed!

Was there any specific questions they would ask you in return?

Okranurse: hey I cant reply to private messages. But feel free to email me at [email protected] that way I can reply back to you in private :)

but yeah in reply....I bought a couple sheets for the department I want to stand out in and the rest is regular. Cause I know budget! but email me :)

Thanks ktlam. Will email you next time.

So excited guys! After my final skills checkoff tomorrow (basically draw any major skill out of a hat and should be able to assess, perform, and document properly), I will be on my way to the airport! Should be in Austin in time for dinner : )

have a safe flight!! :) and good luck!

One of my application statuses has been updated to "declined". :( It was like a shot to my heart. haha. Hopefully the rest don't update to that status anytime soon...at least let me get through the open house before declining me! lol

Good luck to all and see you soon!

BotoxBaby -- was it DCMC that rejected the app? If so, it might be because you're an ADN. For the June cohort, they only wanted BSNs (which was also the case for UMCB, and Seton NW). I know that each of those facilities hired at least a few ADNs in June, but all the ones I know of were people who were already employed by the Seton system. I'm not sure if that's still the case.

Another possible reason for a rejection is that they don't have any openings for this cohort. For June, neither Seton SW or Shoal Creek was hiring, and Hays only had one or two positions total.

Hi there Purkinje!

Thanks for the info. It was actually Hays that declined my application. Maybe they already filled the position? or maybe it is because I am an ADN like you mentioned. I know it's a long shot that I will be hired on at Seton, but I figure I won't know for sure unless I try, right? I am putting my best foot forward and will be trying my best to land an interview while at the open house, hopefully the recognize my abilities and I get a call back.

Thanks again for the info! If you think of anything else, please feel free to post it! I need all the suggestions I can get! :)
