Pay scales Odessa/Midland

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi all,

I'm looking at moving to the Odessa/Midland area and was hoping to get a feel for the pay scales.

Would anyone one mind letting me know what the hospitals are generally paying? I have 3 years critical care experience with a BSN and would be looking for a staff RN position in an ICU.

Thanks for for your help!

With three years of acute care experience, hospitals in that area would probably offer you a wage in the mid to high $20s per hour, but I doubt that any of the acute care facilities would pay anything north of $30/hr.

That seems low for an area where 1 bedroom apartments are $1000+ per month. Am I not finding more affordable housing or is this just the way it is out there?

Rents and housing prices have skyrocketed due to the recent oil boom in that area. Since masses of oilfield workers and others who work in the petrol industry have driven up the demand for housing, places that used to rent for $600/month are now renting for almost double that amount.

Oh that's terrible. So the oil industry is pushing the cost of living up, and no other industry is adjusting wages? Thanks for the help!

Missjamie01, are you asking me if I interviewed in June? No, I just started looking at the area and am just asking some general questions.

I'm a little late to the game, but I would say that you should expect to get paid ~$25/hr. Any higher than that would be generous. I worked at Midland Memorial and their starting pay is 22/hr. The rent is ridiculous out there because of the oil industry. Its actually cheaper to buy a house than rent, also because most of the apartments are run down. What most of the nurses at MMH did was work extra shifts, there're so short staffed there that the managers don't care about compassion fatigue. Its not uncommon for nurses to either work 4-6 shifts/week or to have a second job. At least there's no state income tax.

This is true. The cost of living compared to what nurses make in Midland/Odessa is very disproportionate. Rent will continue to increase in 2015 and with a starting pay rate at ~$23 (I don't know that many nurses that make more then $25). For a midscale 1 bedroom, except to pay at least $1400. You can find lower end apartments at 1100 and 1200 but those places are run down, dirty, out of date, and running cold water constantly.
