U.S.A. Texas

Hi, so I failed the Nclex first time and as I wait to retake it for the second time can I work as a nurse Extern if I am offered a position? The nurse Extern is different from an Internship and the requirements are different. I am in Texas. Help anyone?! Thank you:)

I know that this is not what you want to hear. . .

In TX, a Graduate nurse is permitted to function in the same way as a licensed nurse prior to taking NCLEX. Unfortunately, if that individual fails NCLEX, this status changes and s/he can only function as an unlicensed person. This rules out any participation in functions that are reserved for licensed nurses so it is impossible to participate in an externship or any other type of training program for new grads. Upon passing NCLEX, the individual is once again eligible for "new grad" programs. This is the main reason that many hospitals won't hire new grads until they are actually licensed; they don't want to have to deal with the problems that arise after NCLEX failure.

You can still work in a job that does not require a nursing license. Best of luck to you as you prepare for NCLEX again.

Ok Thank you for your reply! I passed 2nd time around and currently working as an RN BSN!
