New Jurisprudence Exam

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hey Guys,

Found out today that starting on Sept 1, 2008 there will be an exam that everyone has to take before receiving their liscense. This exam is over nursing ethics. I received this info from the Texas board of nursing in Austin. There will be more information on their website he said closer to time at www.bon.state.tx.us. The board member said that we can take before or after the nclex and their will be seminars and material to study for this. Just thought ya would want to know.

I fully expect them to require it for the rest of us at some point. Just like with the fingerprinting - they require it on all the new licensees and have a "lottery" system for getting all the prior licensees fingerprints on file.

Either that or they might require a legal CE like they do with the one time CEs like the bioterrorism.

I will be one of the first classes to take it since I grad in May 09 and when I found out about it I will have to admit I was POed, but now that I have actually thought about it I am kinda ok with it. I am in my last year and have taken a class that was called "legal and ethical issues in nursing" and even though I passed with an A, I am constantly seeking aswers to questions of that nature. I think that it is important to get a foundation in the beginning, but as I have proceded through the program, much of my foundation has dicipated (sp??). Now that we are required to take this test, we will be prepared for it. Just the act of preparing us for it after having the info we didnt have when 'I' took the class will hopefully draw those lines and make everything more concrete. I personally dont want my license in question after I have worked so hard to get it (assuming that all goes well this last year).

Class starts back up tomorrow. I'm going to be asking if they plan to add some lecture time to our already crazy schedule before we graduate. I reckon they'll do it sometime in the last semester of the program.

Nothing like trying to cram in one more thing! :)

We were told about it last semester and I am guessing this is when it all started. My instructor told us that they were including more questions dealing with that on the tests, which I have already seen. Also, they were going to incorporate more into lectures. They promised we would be prepared so I am trusting them with this. I would deffinately ask your instructors though.

Classes start back up for us tomorrow as well.

I emailed my professors and thankfully they were aware of it. They told us not to worry about it as we can start taking it in the beginning of 2009 and retake it as many times as we need as long as we pass it before sitting for the NCLEX.

This Fall we have two (out of 8) tests with half the test items being various legal stuff about the role of a nurse-- stuff for this test.

I'll be taking this since I graduate May 2009 and I don't have a problem with it. As nurses we have so much responsibility and it to our benefit to know the law. I don't see it as just "one more thing" to do but an opportunity to know the rules and regulations that we will be held to in real practice.

May 2009 here, too.

I won't have any problem with it, either, as long as it's something that is taught in nursing school.

I just got a letter with instructions on taking this exam. Apparently, they trust us to take it online, unproctored. We must pass the exam before being allowed to sit for the NCLEX. If you fail the exam, it can be taken again after 7 days and there is no limit to the number of times the exam can be taken. The letter also provided web links to study material for the exam. I don't have it handy though.
