Hello everyone!

I'm a new to this TX forum! I am a canadian nursing student wanting to relocate to Houston!! I'll be graduating in August 2004 and will plan on taking the NCLEX and all that jazz pretty soon...

anyways, i have 2 quesions:

1) I spoke to someone in HR at Memorial Hermann today and he told me that the starting wage for a new grad nurse at this hospital was $20.50/hr. I'm just curious if this is an average wage that new nurses should expect? if you're a new grad or knows someone who just started working, i'd love to to know about different wage comparisons!

2) Also, does anyone have any information regarding the reputation of Memorial Hermann and whether this is a good teaching/learning hospital? I'm interested in their L&D internship.

I'm looking forward to reading the responses for this thread!!!! Thanks for all the interesting posts i've read in this nursing forum! :chuckle

you know, I graduated in Dec, and when I spoke to someone at Hermann, they told me new RN pay was $18/hr. And since I'm not from Houston, I didn't know where else to look, so I decided NOT to go to Houston based on that salary and the cost of living in Houston. Hopefully the pay has increased.

i'm graduating this and and also job searching...the pay has increased...to $20.50/hr

Hermann is the best as far I am I concerned. HR is a little dippy, but which one isn't? Anyway, they are top notch and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a place to work.

RANKINGS for top hospitals in TMC i've heard from many HRs:

1) The Methodist Hospital

2) MD Anderson

3)Texas Children's Hospital

Why Houston? Its hot and humid ! Why not Philadelphia ? Its reasonably sunny compared to Buffalo and Pittsburgh. And its close to the shore, the Poconos, Canada, NYC and DC. Its the most reasonable place to live if you don't like paying high rent on the east coast. And it accepts the Canadian boards.

Just a suggestion, but you know you may have heat stroke in Houston this summer.

I graduated in "98" and have been working for the Memorial Hermann Hospital System for 6 years. I went into the intern program (which was the best) and worked my way up the ranks. I have been a clinical manager for 2 years and wouldn"t consider changing to another outside hospital. I have worked in other hospitals as a nurse aide for 8 years, so I have seen how many of the other hospitals work. I recommend the MHHS and the pay if very competitive. New grads are coming into the system for around 20.00/hour. Varies with the location. GOOD LUCK!!!!:p

Why not Austin? (he-he-he) :p
