Husband has orders to Brooks AFB. Can anyone shed any light on the San Antonio area for me? I'm currently a Hospice nurse in Georgia and have worked for the VA before in Omaha Nebraska. Would really like to get into Civil Service and have heard that Brooks Army Med Center would be a great place to work. Anyone work there or has worked there in the past? Would like to get some input from anyone on working environment, avg pay rate, etc....

Have also heard that Live Oak is a nice area to live and that school are pretty decent. Comments???

Would appreciate any info someone can give to me.

Thanks!

dont know too much about San Antonio...i live a few hours from there. yes, you can work as a GS (or contractor) at either BAMC (Brook Army Medical Center/Ft Sam Houston) or at Wilford Hall Medical Center (Lackland AFB).

you will get spousal preference. apply on USAJOBS

dont know San Antonio well like i said, but i drive through it alot cuz i board my dogs there at a very ritzy doggy dude ranch. i like the area of Bulverde......if i had to live within commuting distance to SA

HOOAH!

p.s. i will be working at an army post in two weeks again-worked for one for 3 years just recently. cant wait to get back. wont do civilian sector nursing ever again.

are you at Ft Stewart or Ft Benning?

Right now I'm working as a Hospice nurse in Valdosta Georgia, husband is at Moody AFB. I absoultly love hospice but nothing beats the benefits of Civil Service. Unfortunantely, won't get spousal pref because my hubby is not active duty, he is civilian Air Force. I've been on USAJOBS just really hate to do the resume since it is so long, but like I said before can't beat the benefits so doing the resume should pay off. I have noticed that some of the RN jobs posted have been GS-10 or GS-11, so it sounds like the pay may be comparable to my present rate.

Can't wait to move but I probably won't be there until after Christmas. Hopefully will have a job lined up to start in January.

Thanks for you input!

I'm only a nursing student, but I want to extend a future welcome to you from San Antonio. Live Oak is OK, but the Schertz/Cibolo area is probably even better...it's just a little bit further north than Live Oak.

yes i was GS 10 and i have an associates degree. you cant beat the pay and benefits. but if there are no GS positions, defense contracting is another very good option.

I recently moved to San Antonio myself as my hubby got reassigned to Randolph AFB. I live in Cibolo and love it. Not too crowded and close enough to everything. The only bad part is my commute...about 40 minutes. I work in a downtown hospital but have heard good and bad things about working at Brooks. Feel free to PM me if there is anything I could be of assistance.
