Moving to Corpus Christi

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello, my husband and I are thinking of moving to Corpus Christi. Presently I have experience in geriatrics, LTC and outpatient nursing and specialize in anticoagulation therapy and patient education. The job postings I'm seeing online are for staff nursing positions, and I don't see any outpatient jobs listed besides home health. I would like to get into home health but not in a new area. I've heard the nurse/patient ratios are not so good and I would like to avoid a floor job if possible.

Questions, given the info above:

1) Where is a good place to work? Places to avoid?

2) What neighborhoods are good/bad to purchase a home in?

3) Is there are nursing shortage? ie. relocation expenses paid/bonus?

4) What other questions should I be asking???

THANKS!

Anyone? Anything helps. I know nothing and nobody in the area...

Sorry the reply has taken so long but that may say something about this area. I have worked in CC for more than 1 year and have jumped employers 3 times. This is very out of character for me but I have never felt at home or comfortable here. I would suggest not working for the major medical employer of the town. HH may be a good idea since you are more on your own but just do your research. Spohn has kind of have a monopoly with the hospital system. I would not advise a nurse to move here unless you have family in the area for support. I know the rent may look cheap in comparison to Washington but there is a reason for everything. I plan on moving back to Dallas in a year or two when RN school is completed. If you are thinking beach think more like cess pool unless your in south padre. The hurricane season makes me bite my nails for months and when people say it's hot/humid here you really have felt nothing like it. During the summer months kids can't even play outside it's just really disgusting. I wish I had something better to say about it but if you are looking for the truth you got it. The people here are friendly but very traditional, religious and if you are more on the left side or openminded you may be the odd man out. I would suggest trying a major metro area like Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and I have heard that Austin is very nice too. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

totally totally 100 percent agree with you. EVERYONE from "out of town" who comes here feels that way. i DEFINITELY dont recommend any of the major hospitals in town, not a SINGLE one. i cant even begin to list the reasons..there are so many. i am moving to the nurse-friendly hill country this month!

and omg-jennifer-JUST LIKE ME...i have never felt "at home" or "comfortable" here. i have been here one year and STILL feel so uncomfortable. just dont like it. oh p.s. it might have to do with me being "anglo" (gosh i am starting to really hate being called that)..and am tired of not being able to communicate with my patients and coworkers saying "well you have been here a year now, you should have picked up enough spanish to speak to your patients".

i am SO outta here.

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear the bad news in CC. I went to school there. I worked at Spohn in the Cath Lab and Spohn gave me a scholarship for school. I lived in the South side of town......Near the beach. I had to live across Cole Park at first to be near the hospital, I heard that was bad at night. I went to evening classes and minded my own business and never had any trouble.

The people I worked with played some good jokes on me,we all laughed. My dialect I guess. My son was schooled in Flour Bluff and did well.

I moved back home due to illness and needed surgery that would require a significant time away from work....so I had the help of my family back home.

I did work in a LTC facility when I first arrived there, not knowing a soul, and that was a bit scary. But within 2 weeks Spohn called me.

I wish you well in the hill country. Is that at or around Austin? That is a great town I think but know nothing about the nursing scene their.

Good Luck!:balloons:

Well, well. Thank you for the imput! It's not what I wanted to hear but I do appreciate it muchly. Now, I've been doing research on Austin per your suggestions. Seems like a really cool city. I think I would like it there. Lakes, hills, culture, cheap homes... I was dubious about CC but after surfing the web on Austin I am totally sold on it. Thanks a million for your guidance.

Sharona, best wishes with your surgery and subsequent recovery! It sucks being in the other side.

Hey you are more than welcome. I bought a copy of the local newspaper and sent out cover letters before arriving, if that helps. San ANtonio is nice too. And CCC is only a matter of hours to go visit the beach from either place.

Good Luck, Hope you get a job you like with nice people. I had an awesome time there.......20 years ago....lol

Good for you! My Boyfriend and I made a trip to Austin in September for the weekend. We stayed Downtown and I was kind of leary but when we got there it was wonderful. We were walking around 6th street at 2am and we felt very safe. The streets were so clean you could eat off them! We met friends in Roundrock (nice area) and it was really easy to get around Austin. Besides they have an IKEA which is one big reason to move there! LOL. I love the area and it was nice drive, beautiful scenery once we got past the San Antonio area. I have no idea about the hospitals but the area looks great. Keep looking maybe a MAGNET hospital? Good luck!
