Moving from Philadelphia to Houston

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are planning to move to Houston from Philadelphia. I am currently a staff nurse at a large hospital here with 10+ years of experience on the mother-baby unit and wanted to explore similar career opportunities in Houston.

Can anyone tell me a bit about the nursing opportunities in Houston? Is there many available? How is the pay? Which area should we look to live?

Thanks in advance!

What part of Houston are you looking for? For days or nights? I work out at Methodist West Hospital in West Houston and I know they're looking for experienced mother/baby nurses. So much so that they're offering a pretty hefty sign on bonus. Methodist is a great system to work for too. If you're looking for more centrally located, lots of choices in the Texas Medical Center- Memorial Hermann, Texas Childrens, Texas Women's all have antepartum units and lots of babies being born.

Specializes in ER, progressive care.

I know Houston Methodist is offering a sign-on bonus. There are different locations - one is in the Medical Center and there are also other locations as well: Houston Methodist Locations | Houston Methodist

Methodist has been ranked as the #1 hospital in TX. I hear they treat their nurses very well.

If you're thinking about moving to Houston, I would think about where you are going to live first. You don't want to live in southeast Houston and end up having to drive all the way up to The Woodlands which is north. Traffic can be a nightmare.

They do treat their nurses very well, we get lots of bonuses and extras. I really do enjoy working for this company. someone pm'ed me and asked what charting system we use (can't reply, not enough posts , sorry!) and we use MeTHOD, which I'm pretty sure Methodist just made up. It's not to bad. We're supposedly switching to Epic in the next couple of years

Howdy!

I encourage you to follow PP's advice - choose your living area based upon where you work. H-town is huge and although our traffic is not as difficult as some other large cities, you don't want to have to deal with a killer commute if it's possible to avoid it. If you have kids, schools will also be a big relocation factor. Working with an experienced Realtor is a very good idea, as there are some very unique aspects that can have a significant cost impact on your choice of location. Relocating during the "winter" months is a also a good idea. (hey, we DO SO have winter... it even freezes once in a while) That will give you some time to acclimate before you're faced with our infamous jungle-hot summer.

I'm a big fan of the West Houston / Katy area. Katy Schools are top-notch and the I-10 West corridor is one of the least congested in the area. There is a very wide range of housing - from low-cost starter houses to luxury digs. HERE is a great site to explore all of the possibilities. As you're looking around - be sure to consider flood zones and evacuation zones. These are very real issues, as it will have a significant effect upon your insurance & maybe your peace of mind.
