Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center

U.S.A. Texas

Hey guys!

I was given the opportunity to work nights in Emergency at Memorial City Medical Center. Can anyone provide any information about the work culture there? How are the facilities? Nurse to patient ratio? Breaks? Pay? Business? or anything else you would like to add :)

Im Canadian so i'm not sure what to expect!

Thanks so much!

Did HR not give you any information?

I am going through a travel company and although I was offered the position, I have not accepted it yet because I wanted to research the facility/emergency dept before I made any decisions. Just looking for some non-biased opinions.

Howdy!

I actually live ~ 5 miles from that facility. Memorial-Hermann is a powerhouse (not for profit) health care system in Houston with a tertiary facility in The Medical Center and community hospitals in every area of the region. They were awarded Magnet status in 2010 and have a great reputation for quality of care & a very progressive Chief Nursing Officer. If you're coming in as a traveler, you won't be concerned about their benefit package, I suppose.

It's a very nice campus. Free parking (unlike The Medical Center) and just across the street from a major shopping mall. This area of town includes the "Memorial Villages" - very upscale - which is reflected in the patient population. The ED is very busy as the campus is located along I-10 so it has a lot of 'drop in' as well as EMS trauma. Scheduling & workload are pretty much the same in all Houston-area hospitals. Since there is no 'contract' in place (no union), there are no specific guarantee about breaks - these are just arranged to fit into the work schedule.

Lots of housing options in that area - nothing sketchy in that area of town. Mass transit is insignificant in Houston - just not part of the culture - so you'll need a reliable (air conditioned) vehicle. I wouldn't recommend trying to live very far away because even working nights, you may be faced with some daunting commutes. Houston climate is tropical. Summers are "Africa-hot" - triple digits & very high humidity. Hurricanes season is from May - October but that area is not in a "surge zone", so there is no mandatory evacuation like areas closer to the coast.

You will have a lot to do/see on weekends. Professional sports (including hockey - eh!) and Soccer (Go Dynamo!). Very large & active performing arts district, lots of live music venues. The beach is only an hour away. It will also be easy to visit other cities if you want to do that - driving time to San Antonio is 3 hours, Austin 2 hours & D-FW 3.5 hours.

Wow, thanks so much!!

There is a traveler in the MICU that is canceling her contract. It is a very hard place to work. Short staffing is chronic and most importantly, unsafe assignments. Remember that you are the protector of your patients and your license. I will never work there again. More importantly, I would NEVER allow a family member to be cared for there. Unsafe, unsafe.

Has anyone applied to the new grad RN position recently posted on the website?

its the same one, I guess they reopened those applications again
