BTW - I got CPR cert in August at Brookhaven... it said the class will be until 4 PM (on a Sat) but we got out at 11:30.

Does anyone know when Success Camp is? Also, if you have registered, the classes are already showing up on Blackboard, but they are .... totally empty! I think the clinicals go will be scheduled via lotto, though, is that correct? But hey, it won't hurt to have it in there for now ;)

I don't mind being added to the facebook group (once it is made) so I can answer questions there :) A FB group is a great place for your class to ask questions, talk about projects, create study groups, etc.

I was the one who made the FB group for my class. I waited until there was a mass email sent out from the nursing faculty to all of the students who made it and I copied and pasted all the student's emails and sent a mass email out inviting them all to join the group.

Success Camp should be sometime in January before classes start. The faculty will send you an email letting you know the dates and times. They should also be sending you an email with a packet that list all the things you have to have done before classes start such as physical exam, drug test, CPR card, immunizations, TX drivers license and they will let you know about scrubs too. It's alot to do so make sure you keep on top of it because they have certain deadlines for different things.

You shouldn't register for anything yet. You will receive an email letting you know which classes to register for. It is safe to register for Foundations because everyone will be in that class but your skills and clinical classes are divided up so you won't know which one to register for until they email you with the list.

Don't let the schedule fool you though. You will be at school Monday through Friday (even though the schedule shows one day Foundations, one day clinical and one day skills lab). The first 6 weeks you will not go to the hospital for clinical, you will be doing "pre-clinical" in the skills lab learning different skills. Then also you will have one day a week to practice your skills in open lab.

For example my schedule 1st semester was:

Monday - 1pm-4pm Pre-clinical

Tuesday - 1pm-4pm Pre-clinical

Wednesday - Open Lab

Thursday - Skills lab 9am-12pm

Friday - Foundations lecture 9am-2pm

Then once we started hospital clinicals the only thing that changed was clinical was 7am-5pm Monday and on tuesdays we had a day off. The rest of the schedule was the same. Your schedule should be similar to mine unless they change the way they do things.

I created a FB group and will follow Briterz lead on adding everyone once the official emails start to come out from Brookhaven. I am assuming that will be sometime in the near future. If you want me to go ahead and add you in now, just send me a message through allnurses.

Thanks again for all the help, Briterz. What were some of the most difficult things in first semester? I am starting to try and read some but the foundations book is monstrous. I don't know where to start!!! :-)

I am so excited!!! Can’t wait for January!!!

Laffitte, which foundations book are we using? Have you already bought all your books?

SA2009 - I bought an older fundamentals book off Amazon a few months back just so I could look stuff over. It was pretty cheap, unlike what we will be required to buy shortly!!! The one I have is Fundamentals of Nursing by Kozier & Erb, 8th Edition. I think the current version is 9th or so. One of the posts from last year’s students mentioned getting this one specifically so I did.

I forgot to mention the FB group’s name - Brookhaven Nursing Class of Spring 2014. I was going to put Spring 2013 but figured the graduation semester was more positive than the start of the madness. :-)

One of the hardest things in 1st semester is starting to 'think like a nurse'. You all probably already heard this but exams in nursing school are HARD! Before nursing school I would be able to go to the lecture and absorb all the material and wouldn't need to sit down and study until the day before the exam. I would cram all I could into my brain then 'dump' it all when I took the test and I would get A's and B's.

Well I learned REALLY fast that nursing exams are not made the way pre-req exams are. I received a low 70 on my first foundations exam. That was not because I didn't study either. The way they word the questions and the multiple choice answers they have make your head spin. The best advice I could give you for the exams is:

1. Show up to lecture on time, don't leave the room unless there is a break and do not miss any lecture classes!

2. Read the chapter (at least skim) and power points before class. This way, during the lecture you aren't hearing the material for the first time and trying to take massive notes. I find that if I don't prepare before class I become too busy trying to jot everything down that is on the screen rather than actually listening to what is being taught.

3. Use this book Prentice Hall Reviews & Rationales: Nursing Fundamentals (2nd Edition): MaryAnn Hogan, Mary Jean Je Ricci MSN RN, Donna Taliaferro PhD, Sara Bolten RN MSN: 9780132240789: Amazon.com: Books to study also. You can buy it on amazon or even find it at half priced books or other book stores for cheaper. It goes over different topics and has great study questions that are similar in style to what you will see on your exams. Also a NCLEX study guide like this Amazon.com: Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN® Examination, 5e (Saunders Comprehensive Review for Nclex-Rn) (9781437708257): Linda Anne Silvestri: Books helps alot too!

4. Form study groups!! Reviewing the material with others and bouncing ideas and questions off of each other helps the material 'stick' in your brain. If you form a group with people you trust (and know they are hard workers) you can split up the study material so each person is responsible for doing a 'study guide' for their assigned chapters. I have a study group that does this and it helps alot and makes it not so overwhelming because you are not doing it all alone.

5. Answer the questions that you find at the end of the chapters. Again these questions are similar in style as the ones on the exams.

6. Once classes start you will be given an access code to go have access to case studies on Evolve. These case studies help SO MUCH and some of the questions they ask show up on the exams sometimes.

I think that is it for now. Just remember to take it a day at a time and know that YOU CAN DO IT! Things will be very overwhelming after Success Camp but remember that THOUSANDS of student went through Brookhaven's program and passed and you can too!

Thank you for the info! Just put the books on order...

Another question regarding scheduling - how did the summer semester look like from schedule? That's probably one of my biggests worries as I will have to work part-time (most likely).

The summer semester is the complete summer. You start the week after spring finals and I believe because you start the program in the spring your summer semester goes right up until fall semester starts with no break. You will be doing 2nd semester during the summer which is ALOT of material so that is why you go straight through with no break.

The group is set up as "Closed" which means anyone can see the group and who is in it but only members can post to it. I typed in "Brookhaven N" and as soon as the N was typed in the group popped up first in the list...? Not sure that helps you any. If any of you are having problems I will be adding everyone in as soon as the first email comes out from Brookhaven. I would imagine that will be soon since success camp is mandatory and we will need to plan around it!!! :-)

Hey guys!! I got in too! I've just been having some issues with my home internet, and my phone wouldn't allow me to post for some reason... Anyway, YAY!! I'm excited to meet everyone, and look forward to success camp! And I definitely want to be a part of the FB group!

How do you know how/where to purchase the book package? Also, i noticed in our Foundations class that some people have already registered.....how do these people know what their schedule is? Was there an email that was sent, that I maybe missed?
