Hi Everyone,

I'll be applying for HCC Spring 2012. I was intending on taking my prerequisites in the Fall, but I've decided to knock out A&P II and Micro this summer to avoid any complications in the application process. I'm getting conflicting reports that prereqs have to be complete BEFORE the application is due, then others say that I'm allowed 1 course in progress. Not sure, so just to be on the safe side I've opted to register for both courses over the summer.

I hope this thread will bring together all the Houston Community College Spring 2012 applicants.

How far into the semester did this orientation occur and how much notice do they give you? Can you select which days you attend? I work Fridays so this concerns me.

I am referring to : "To answer your questions, yes, the orientation I'm speaking of is different than the 1st day of Pharmacology and you will be receiving that information around the first week within your Pharm class."

Sorry to disappoint but, you cannot choose the days. They only give you the choice to watch it digitally at home over the internet, or to actually be in the room. This orientation, if I remember correctly, was almost a month after we received the packet? I'm sorry, I don't remember exactly. They will tell you to dump your job or go half-time. I hope your work will understand!

Good deal! Thanks again. This is very helpful information. The only thing that concerns me is those other 2 orientations. I wish I new specific dates. I work full time during the day so I want to make sure that I know well in advance so that I can schedule off. Do you know if its further along into the semester that those orientations take place??

Also, what about the application process?? Do you know how students are chosen for the program?? I hate that they make us go through all this mumbo jumbo so they can say that we did not get into the program.

Any ideas??

very important shots info:

i don't know what they have told you all but, you need to make sure you get your hep b vaccinations out of the way. you also need to get a titer done for varicella (chicken pox), to prove you had it. they will not accept a letter from your doctor for us, they wanted valid proof. if you didn't have chicken pox, you need to get your varicella zoster vaccination asap. you now need to have your meningicoccal vaccination, which we weren't told until the last second. good thing for me i was in the army and have every vaccination known to man inside my body. :lol2: remember, never wait to do anything at the last second. they were turning away students left and right because they didn't have certain vaccines in a certain time frame. be prepared! you do not need your physical and drug test until you get the proper paperwork from coleman college, which you will receive on your 1st day of orientation. on your 1st day of orientation, they will check off everyone who has their vaccinations completed. now, wouldn't you like to be one of those lucky students who have everything (shots) completed so you don't have to mess with the hassel?

immunization list:

meningicoccal vaccination

tdap

mmr (2 different times)

hbv (3 different times)

chicken pox titer or varicella zoster vaccination

flu shot (seasonal) if in season*

tb test or x-ray, if known + (lasts only 1 year)

phew i'm so glad i have all my immunizations completed. i just have to update my cpr card(expires in 2012 so i'm sure hcc wants it valid the entire time i'm in the program) and chicken pox titer.

Ugh! I hope it's in October because that is the only month that would work for me. I already have a BA in another field and am a marketing manager so it's not a job I can afford to just quit, it's a professional job. :-( Nursing will be a more flexible career believe it or not- one of many reasons I am changing careers.

if you got the "conditional" letter stating you are eligible to take pharmacology, then when you pass pharm and get an "a" on the math exam, you're in! after i did all that, i was told to sign up for fall. many people will not pass pharm or the math test and many will drop out so, if you are dedicated and mature, you will do just fine :D

Another thing, the reason the school makes you go through all this, "mumbo-jumbo" is to weed out the immature and under-qualified students so they may get the very dedicated, I'll-do-anything students into the program! :yeah:

So smile, believe in yourself and the grace of God because you WILL MAKE IT!

That is so true. We just have to stick with the program and do the best we can. Goodluck everyone. Yea I suspected the pharmacology course is to weed out students.
