GN position

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I just recently moved from IL and am surprised how hard it is to get a job over here. I graduated in December, passed the boards in March and moved to Texas in April. Til now i have no job yet.

In IL I had 2 jobs lined up and I declined, since we decided to move to Texas. There are NO GN positions in IL, only RN positions and they give you a 8-12 weeks orientation. So please if someone could tell me how it works.

I arrived April 15th and in most hospitals, the application for a GN were due end of March. And nothing is posted to when the hospitals would have another opportunity to apply for a GN position.

Are there any place where I could get a job? I applied at many places with no such luck

Thanks

T

Hi labcat01

Yeah we are in the same boat and we will get thru this. I feel frustrated sometimes, but I'm trying to focus on the solution rather than the problem.

I saw on Harris County Hospital District website that there are some position as nurse interns and I applied yesterday. Last week there was a job fair at VA and they said that they would call in 2 weeks.

I also saw on HCA website there is a link for New Grads:

http://www.hcacareers.com/nursing.html

If you click on the link above, scroll down to the bottom and click on the NURSING COLLEGE CAREER EVENTS and you will see that there is a career fair on May 13th at Houston Grand Plaza Hotel. Im keeping my fingers crossed. Hope this helps!

One hospital called and told me that they know of a hospital that still had a GN position open, in which the application was due March something and the position started January. Last week they told me they would call me sometime this coming week if I qualified for that position. Anyhow i thought i heard wrong that they said it started January (it was a voicemail) so i listened to the voicemail again and yup she said it started in January. So do you have to apply for a new grad position while in the last semester of nursing is my question?

Im so confused.

all the best

Thanks for the info! Yeah, GN positions in the big Texas cities are usually applied for in the last semester of nursing school so you can start right after you graduate. What hospital was interviewing in March for a January start date??? (you can PM me if you don't want to post it). That is crazy! You sound like you've had good luck with the HR people. I have not been so lucky. When I can get a live person on the phone, they usually are vague and not that helpful :(

Anyway, good luck! I will definitely let you know if I here of anything else.

I had the same problem as a new grad that you are having when I decided to move to Houston last year (April 07). At home in SC there were plenty of jobs for new grads but I found I had missed all the deadlines here in Houston. I couldn't believe it, I graduated with a 3.85 and couldn't find a job!!! Have faith, with persistence you will find one. You have to call and follow up with people though, it took a month or so of emailing and calling before I heard back from anyone.

I found a job at Methodist in the med center. I think they are still hiring new grads, though you may not get the specialty areas because these tend to fill up early on. Give them a try! Good luck and don't give up!

The above poster is correct. I applied, and was offered by GN position 1 month into my last semester of nursing school!

I was surprised even then that the recruiter said that applicants were already being interviewed at the time of our in school luncheon!!

Some schools graduate in August in the Dallas area, so there may be later internships opening up! (I'm not sure about the Houston area.)

Good luck, hope you find something quickly!! :)

I am in the process of moving from KS to Houston. Two of the places I did clinicals offered me jobs but of course I told them I was moving. I have 1 yr as a PCT/med surg and almost one year as a charge nurseLPN (IV cert) in LTC but I have not heard anything from any of the hospitals I applied to. I applied to UTMB Galveston and HCA. I am starting to get worried. I graduated with my RN in May 2008.

You poor babies! :heartbeat

It is most distressing for me to read of your difficulties in finding your first job. Especially here in the Houston area where the shortage is most dire.

I work with a hospital system & I can help you. As a native Texan, I feel personally responsible for improving the impression y'all must have of our wonderful state & city. Please PM me so I can get you directly connected with one of our recruiters.

Howdy, Houston isn't as bad about jobs as it seems, we just seem to have bad HR people for the nursing depts. Find online what position you want, fill out the application online and then take a copy of your resume no matter how small and go directly to the nurse manager for that dept. If you interview well with them, the NM will go to HR pull your stuff and have HR follow up to hire you. For some reason everyone seems to get lost in the mess that is HR. (ps this has gotten me 2 positions in the ER as a PCA 3 right out of school (before I had any experience) Many places are still desperate for nurses with good heads and morals. GOOD LUCK
