Does NL or THR have the clinical rotations in the summer that brief you on your skills? There is one at EC but it's about $200 and lasts only 6 days....I am really thinking about taking it but the price is a little steep....

No, I have never heard about it. Why do yo want to do it?

Because I am glutton for punishment :lol2: I was just thinking about it because it might help me gain the skills that might be lost over the summer break.

I saw a sign that pathophysiology and pharmacology are going to be pre-reqs beginning Fall '06???? Is that true????? Has anyone else heard that?

No. Allison, you hear/see everything first. :)

I was thinking about taking those classes during the summer semester... but I don't want to drive to Arlington.

I might have the wrong information - it may not be for the nursing program. I just saw a flyer really briefly. Yeah I was looking at taking those classes but I didn't find out they were in Arlington until yesterday! I don't think I will be doing that....I know they have some at Brookhaven so I might look there...I really just want a summer off

I learned this little thing for remembering alkalosis and acidosis in a pinch.

alkalosis - kicking up the pH (I bolded the k to stand for the k in kicking)

acidosis- sliding down the pH (I bolded the d to stand for the d in down)

You may already have this stuff down pat but I was a little rusty around the edges and I know this is something I will always remember. Also if you take away the 7 in normal pH (7.35-7.45) you have the normal numbers for PaCO2 (35-45 mmHg).

These little things will help me greatly in determining metabolic acidosis or alkalosis and respiratory acidosis and alkalosis.

If anyone has any more study tips, I am always open for some more :)

I remember it by thinking of ROME which she gave us in class. Which is Respiratory Opposite and Metabolic Equal. Knowing the normal values for pH and CO2 and CO3 you can figure out the rest. That is how I know it. You can figure out if it is acidosis or alkalosis by the pH and than of course lungs is respiratory and kidneys are metabolic. I think pH is pretty easy but after that gets confusing at times. I think I have it down though. Well I hope I do. Do you remember her talking about ROME though?

Thanks for the tips. I am going to start studying fluids and electrolytes today. I started typing my major care plan yesterday. It will be about 25 pages.

And....

:balloons: Congratulations to the new El Centro/North Lake students! :balloons:

See you soon at EC or NL.

Question:

Do you think it is a good idea to take pharmacology online? Has anyone taken it online?

Katie

I am currently taking A&P 2 and Art Appreciation (humanities elective). I will just have Micro. left when I apply and I will be taking that in the fall. My first choice is NL since I live in Irving. Good luck to you. Hopefully, we will be seeing each other in the Spring.

I will finish up my pre-reqs at the end of this semester. When I apply at the end of the summer, I will only need Micro since I am taking Life Span and A&P II this summer. I plan to take Micro in the fall just to get it out of the way while I wait :)

Is your first choice NL or EC? My first choice is NL. I hate trying to find parking at EC!

Seems like I heard that it was somewhat easier to find a related job after you completed your first semester of nursing school because you have the same skills as a CNA. So looking this summer might get you better results. Someone that I use to work with started working at Medical City hospital when she was in RN school and she really liked it. Also, a good way to get your foot in the door might be to do some volunteer work at the place you would like to work.

Hi Jaxia,

First I wanted to say - you have a beautiful name. I have applied at several places but I haven't heard anything back. I can't say I have been really aggressive with it either! lol. I really would like to work in the hospital this summer but I feel like it's too late - I don't know though. Did you want to work in the hospital this summer before you entered nursing school? I have a friend at Baylor and they pay for his edcuation which I think it really neat. He just applied as a PCT and then they wound up paying for him to go to EC. I wish I would have found something like that. I wish you the best of luck in looking for a job. Whereabouts are you located? Which hospital were you looking at working?

It depends on where you're taking it. I know a couple of people who were taking it online through Brookhaven and it's been a tough class. They only have 2 tests: a midterm and the final. If you get behind then it's hard to catch up because each test covered so much material.

Katie,

I have a friend who is taking pharm online through Brookhaven and she said she wishes she would have in-class instruction because there is alot of reading and if you do get behind it's really hard to catch up.
