El centro nursing program fall 2012??

Hi is anyone out there applying to the el centro nursing program for fall 2012? Would you share points and which campus you're choosing ? :)

I have a BA as well. So the new point system will be in my favor as well.

i just went in person during my lunch break and she told me the same. she also said that the new information packets aren't going to be ready for a while because they are still making changes. our best bet is to attend the info session on monday, 5/7. @ rnnelson79, i know why they're working on getting everyone bsn ready. i work for a company downtown that owns and operates hospitals in 11 states. my neighbor also works in hr for baylor. i also volunteer in the er at doctors' white rock. i have heard from all of these sources that going forward, they will only be looking to hire bsns. they will consider adns with considerable experience, and they won't even look at lvns.

so it makes sense that they would eliminate the need for students waste time getting certified in a medical field to get those extra 2 points of experience when they could be working toward their undergrad credits.

twu and uta don't even take medical experience into account so el centro is preparing students to be ready for the transition more quickly.

Slopez205 -- yes, i was talking to my professor in Micro (She has a PhD from TWU) and she said that bc of the new industry changes, it really benefits us to get the BSN done now. She also pointed out that it is cheaper to get the pre-req/support courses for the BSN done this way than to go to the university to get them. We are also not competing with History majors and Enlish majors in those classes, which also benefits us. So yes, it is going to be harder. And yes, it is frustrating for the ones about to apply next semester, but it will benefit everyone in the long run.

She also said she has seen this pattern before when the industry gets saturated with a certain profession (i.e., PA, NP, etc). They change the dynamics to weed out the ones who won't go the "long haul" to accomplish their goals. The market seems to be saturated right now with new RN grads. I can see why El Centro would go this route.

There's another benefit. Despite all the hard work to get an ADN, people still treat nursing like a trade and not a profession. If everyone in the field has a BSN at minimun, that image might change and it will be respected as much as any other white collar profession. The ER Triage nurses I help on my volunteer days have Master degrees and they get treated like maids by the patients sometimes. I also like the idea of society knowing that you have to work to get these type of credentials. That said, I'm scared! :)

on the bright side, the additonal year of theory classes that we'd most likely take online will be a breeze compared to the ADN. I hear it's mostly reading and writing papers.

Yes, I still hope to be one of the fortunate ones for Fall 2012. I got a rejection letter with the wrong info attached. I was told by friend of a friend who helps review the applications that they sent 80 acceptances and 220 rejections by mistake. There should still be 40 acceptances so I'm still hopeful.

I am sorry this has happened to you guys. I am 4th semester at ECC ADN program. I heard what's happened with your letters. (All rumors, which you will soon find out rumors fly around like crazy at this school.) I can tell you what I had is everyone got acceptance letters no matter if you're in or not. Meaning even if you were not accepted, you still go one. Is that true? I also heard they are basically starting all over. I hate to be the downer for your excitement! They are re-tracting a lot. Usually only about 60 make it in (for ECC at least) and 400-500 apply. That's a lot of errors! Even if all of the immunizations weren't done and all classes weren't completed- ppl still got accepted. And that never happens. If you don't have your stuff completed, you are automatically rejected. So if you know your stuff wasn't complete and you got an acceptance letter, you will probably be one that is later told it was an error.

I feel bad for you guys, but let me tell you that this is a prime example of how this school works. It is complete unorganization. They are rude and never take the time to help you or answer your questions. The actual instructors for the most part are good, but the administration is terrible. It's like they hate their jobs and take it out on everyone else.

Personally, if I had it to do all over again, I would have never picked ECC. I know I'm almost done now, but it has not been a good experience. Their pass rate on Nclex has gone down the last few years, and they are just not a good school anymore. I would look at programs like the UTA BSN online program that I think is only 15 or 18 months? Or even a regular BSN program anywhere. I know its more exspensive, but this program is so bad, that the extra money will be worth it. Plus you need a BSN anyways. Like someone said previously, all schools are going to Magnet Status. One of the requirements of going magnet is that all your nurses have to be BSN and not ADN. So all of us are going to take the 13 month bridge at UTA to get our BSN anyways.

This is just my personal opinion. But if you did not actually get in to the program, move on to a better school and know that it was probably for the best.

If you are one that did make it in, congrats. And get ready for 2 crazy years! Get all of your extra classes out of the way over the summer and winter semester. Don't try to take A&P or Micro (or whatever classes) on top of your RNSG classes. Nursing school is very demanding. I know people that tried to work 40 hours per week, and it's just too much! When I got in, I cut my hours to 30 per week and it's very tough. If you work at a hospital and can do weekends, its a little easier. But nursing school will easily tie up 20-30 hours per week.

Did anyone take Speech online?It's offered online...how can speech be online? Anyone know?

Also- is it hard to get an A in A&P taken during the summer? It's just so fast paced (plus I have an 8 week old baby which makes it harder).

I agree with i3rns's comment wholeheartedly. I came in the program knowing how disorganized it is based on experiences from current students so it was nothing new to me. However, most of my cohorts weren't aware of this and complained endlessly through the semester. I just miserable hearing them complain...Here is an example, the director of nursing came to talk to the whole class about some changes for the summer and a student made a direct complaint to her in from of the whole class about the programs organization. Her reaction was not a pretty site and she threatened to cancel our classes for the summer. To make matters worse, the instructor said "if you don't like how the program works, GET OUT". Now doesn't that just contradict what they been teaching us all semester? How to communicated "therapeutically"? You can add no "empathy" to the program. For you guys going into the program...don't mess with the director, unless you want to shed some tears! Get some thick skin guys. gl

I heard bad things abt this program both from here and my friend in the program. It really turned me down. Is there anything we can do to improve this? Like writing letters to the board or something? We pay them money and we shouldnt be treated like this.
