DFW June 2012 Internships

Hi everyone, I am a senior nursing student and have started the process of applying for jobs for June 2012. I was hoping to start this thread so people could share if they have heard back from any of the hospitals. So far I have applied to UTSW and Baylor and am just waiting to hear back. Has anyone applied anywhere else?

Hey there..I am a new grad who just moved here from Orlando and got licensed this month..I am super discouraged with the job market here because I thought there was going to be an influx of nurse positions I would qualify for..I moved here with my fiance and don't really know anyone or how the hospital systems work..I applied to all of Parkland's internships for Jan right around when I graduated (because all the other gn programs accepted apps in oct when I didn't even know we were moving ;/) and never heard anything from Parkland..now I've missed the boat for Feb internships and most hospitals wont hire w/out experience..and according to all the blogs I have been reading here it seems hopeless for new grads if you dont filter into an internship..I applied to Baylor's June internships and if I hear anything I'll post on here..maybe we could keep each other posted! Seeing that your from this area..do you know of anywhere at all that hires new grads outside an internship? Because I hear the internships are super competitive too..and whats the deal with Parkland? I didnt even get a rejection letter..I have applied now for over 100+ positions with no luck and one call back to tell me no internship this time around I can't wait till summer to work..I just moved across the country I have bills lol!

I am sorry to hear you haven't had much luck yet! I'm not sure of any hospitals that hire new graduates outside of internships. If there are, I haven't heard of them! I have not applied to Parkland residencies yet since they have not been posted for the June positions. That is discouraging you never heard back from them. I don't know much about their hiring process other than it is pretty competitive. Maybe you could trying calling the HR departments to see if anyone will hire without experience. Other than that I know UT Southwestern has internships for June 2012 open. Methodist is other hospital I was looking into but they have not posted their GN positions. What specialty were you looking at?

The hospitals in DFW as a generality (meaning the vast majority) will NOT hire new grads outside of internships. Most either are not having internships at all, will only grant them to people with inside connections (ie: worked there during school, had an externship there or did their preceptorship there or know someone who works there already) or have gone to a "stipend" type of internship where you get a flat rate of pay (not hourly) that is pretty darn low, no benefits and no guarantee of a job when it ends after 12 weeks. HCA hospitals in the Dallas area have gone to this system of interning new graduates. Openings for internships will start posting in March/April for the June start dates.

I feel sorry for anyone moving here believing the hype about Texas having missed the recession. It doesn't take a lot of research to know this is just not the case. Never EVER move somewhere without a job already lined up. Especially not in an economy like this.

I had the same issue with finding a job winter2010. Dont give up. I have one year experience now and just applied to Baylors internship. They still wont hire me without the internship. Good luck!!!

I have already received a request for an interview at UTSW and a phone interview for Baylor. I have applied to THR and Cooks so I'm still waiting on those 2. Good luck guys!

May 2012 grad here as well. Applied to Baylor, THR, and Parkland. Just got an e-mail from Baylor for NICU phone interview. Woot! Good luck, all!
