Any Sam Houston State University Spring 2013 prospective students out there?

U.S.A. Texas

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to post and see if anyone out there was planning to apply to Sam Houston's BSN program this Fall? Or if any of you are already students there. It's a very new program, so I'm just curious about the quality of the program. Unfortunately it's the closest program to where we live by a long shot. So rather than having to drive 2+ hours each way to the medical center I've decided it's probably the best shot. I would prefer to apply to UT or TWU, but I may not have the choice.

I've debated seriously over the last year about whether nursing is the best career choice with the economy being in a stand still and so many new nurses out there not being able to find work.

What I really want to do is to go on to a Pediatric Nurse practitioner program. I had seriously put some thought into going to medical school, but I just don't know if I can bring myself to pay well over $200,000 for the education and spend the next 10 years in school.

Do any of you regret your decision to go to nursing school? Do you feel that there are better career paths out there right now? Or do you think the economy will eventually right itself and the job situation will get better?

I would appreciate your input!

Take Care,

Sonseria

I attend Sam Houston. I applied for Spring 2013 and they said one of my pre reqs wasn't accepted(I took Anatomy at Sam and A&P II at Lonestar they weren't corresponding classes.) I then applied for Fall 2013 and they marked my application incomplete because they didn't have my transcripts (which I don't understand since I have been there 4 years it wouldn't have been hard to get). So here I am again for Spring 2014 I met with Dr. Turner he said everything looks good and "see you down the line" so I guess that means good? I've had so much back and forth with them I don't know what to think is good or not. To my understanding they rank by gpa first and then ties with gpa/alternates are ranked by gpa and teas scores. So I think 3.5 is good and spring is usually less competitive.

Why your AP was not accepted? because I just finished my Associates with Lonestar. I already applied to Prairie View, but I want to have another option. I just tired of spending so much money. How much is the application for the nursing program?

What about the program, do you think is a good program? I do not know anything about Sam. It is true that they are going to move the program to the Woodlands? Thank you

I actually do not know too much about the program either. I haven't heard anything negative about. They first started in fall of 2011 or 2012, so it is fairly new. They just received accreditation August 8th. I heard they increased the amount of students they're accepting too (I think 40 it was 30 before). The application to the nursing program doesn't cost, but you have to apply at Sam first and that is $45. My A&P wasn't accepted because at Sam they offer Anatomy as one class and physiology as another class. Lonestar offers A&P I and A&P II. I took Anatomy at Sam and A&P II at lonestar so they didn't match. They told me to either take physiology at Sam so I'll have Anatomy and physiology or take A&P I at lonestar so I'll have A&P I and A&P II. Hope that clearly explains.

Ok, thank you. I am doing my application with Sam because I have a better chance to get in there, than TWU. TWU wants a perfect score almost in everything...

Hey how did you send your TEAS scores? because ATI gives you two options one is Sam Houston BSN and the other is Sam Houston testing center.

I took my TEAS at Sam so it automatically sent it from the testing center to the nursing department. I would assume the BSN option.

I am also applying for the Spring 2014 term. I made a 69.3% on the teas which I am not excited about lol My science gpa is a 3.59 and overall for pre-reqs is a 3.44. Dr. Turner told me that a 3.3 is considered competitive so we shall see!

I am so sad; i just found that they can take my statistics class because I took the wrong one. Now, I cannot apply for the Nursing program in Sam

Sorry Cannot*

Hey guys I applied for the Spring semester of 2014 at Sam houston and just got a letter in the mail today saying I got accepted but upon further reading of the letter, on the letter they gave me to reply back to them on whether I'm attending or not, it say that it's for the fall of 2014 nursing cohort 6. I'm really confused and was just wondering has anyone encountered something similar to this?

I would call them tomorrow and check. Do you mind sharing your stats? (Gpa teas score)
