Techs provide a great deal of patient care. They typically provide bed baths, change linens, hand out meals and often assist with feeding patients. I know they have many other responsibilities as well. I also know they are ALWAYS busy.

I don't know what the requirements are. If you've seen an ad for a tech position you could probably call the facility for that info.

I agree with studentforlife. Call the place for which you saw the ad and they'll be able to tell you. Some places like you to have certain certifications or licenses prior to employment, like CNA, MA, EMT, et cetera. Some just want you to have CPR, so it all depends on the organization.

They also do things like take vital signs, blood sugars, and can sometimes do simple wound dressing or d/c foleys. Probablly need a CNA certificate or to have completed one semester of nursing school, although as they said, check with the facility, as it can vary.

Some technical schools offer the PCT (patient care technician) program. It is typically a few months long, and enables the graduate to land a job in healthcare facilities as a hospital tech upon completing the program. You could possibly find a job as a tech without this education, but completing the PCT program might make the hiring process a little easier.

Being a ER Tech involves more than feeding patients and removing foley's. They need to start IV's, draw blood, NG Tube placement, montior vitals signs, EKG... and much more. Tech's are the eyes and ears for a nurse with 8 patients, they carry 8-20 patients who they have to be aware of change of LOC, vs, or just general support. I was tech for a very long time I now as a nurse I treasure all my tech's. So, for all you techs out there.....

Thanks
