Valley Region Hospital Brownsville

I am a new ADN grad and have not been able to find any jobs in NY - I posted my resume online and got a call from a recruiter offering me a position at Valley Region Hospital.

Can anyone tell me how bad this hospital is? How do they treat new grads?

Many thanks

I don't know about the hospital, but Brownsville is on the Mexican border and there is a drug cartel war going on in that area.
Even if there is no war, the border areas are strife with smuggling, gangs and what not.
Look for Christus hospital in Victoria. That may be a better option.

This statement is misleading. Like any city, Brownesville has safe areas and questionable areas. There are also safe places to cross the border (like Progreso) and other areas I would not cross if you paid me (Matamoris - not sure of spelling). Just because something is going on south of the border does not mean that the entire region is unsafe.

Brownsville, Texas is pretty safe. Matamoros, is in the mexican side is pretty safe too, but if you go further into matamoros you might bump into problems. other border cities are dangerous in the mexican side only. Good geople (doctors, lawyer, the mexican wealthy) from central Mexico, like from monterrey, are running to Brownsville so they can have a safer living. I grew up in Brownsville and it is not bad at all, but you have to learn how to speak english/spanish to blend in, in other words you have to be cultural sensible and open minded. South Padre Island has a beautiful beach and is 20 min. from brownsville, that is a fav for spring breakers. People are very friendly in south Texas. hope it helps.

I say come on down...the more the merrier. I graduated in May 2008, didn't find any work in the PA, NJ, DE area. (from SE PA). I got a call from the same people you did. I visited Valley regional and everyone seemed really nice. The area I was in was clean, didn't seem too bad. I move there next month to start work there!!! You should interivew, if you like what they have to offer, they'll fly you out for a visit/tour. If you start and you don't like it, you can always leave. That's with any job. Just remember you get paid XYZ Q2 weeks. Save up enough for a "just-in-case-fund". That's what I plan on doing though I doubt I'll need it. The hospital seems very family oriented and friendly. You'll definitely need spanish, I'm hoping to brush up on what I've learned/forgotten. Hope this helps.
