UT- Application Process

Hi Everyone! I am a new "potential" nursing student. This post is going to be long, I apologize! I have been a professional recruiter for seven years and recently started taking my pre-reqs to apply to the UT School of Nursing in Houston. The application process states that being "TSI Complete" is required. I have met with an advisor at Lone Star regarding this process and have called UT as well but I seem to get conflicting answers. I was told by Lone Star that I need to take Math 0310 in order to be TSI Complete. I was told by UT that completing my core classes will make me TSI complete. I don't want it to come down to the application deadline and find out that I am not getting in b/c I have not taken Math 0310. I am taking Statistics this fall, but am opting for PSYCH 2317 for my Statistics requirement. None of the pre-reqs require me to have Math 0310, only Math 0308, which I have completed. (I haven't been in school in 10+ years so I had to take a placement test which placed me into remedial Math) Does anyone know if I am going to hit a roadblock with my application process if I haven't taken Math 0310? HELP!!!!!!! This is making me feel a little crazy!!! I don't want to be turned down b/c of this one thing. Thank you!!!!

You must be TSI complete to recieve a degree as per the state of Texas. So yes if you have not met the requirement through testing or a class then yes it will be a huge roadblock. I suggest you buy a book on basic math and see if you can study on your own and retest out of the requirement for the class. To be honest I dont know anyone who has ever been accepted into a BSN degree program without having completed atleast College Algebra one but I am sure a few exist. Good luck and dont avoid math because it plays a huge role in nursing in my opinion.

I realize that I can't receive a degree until I am TSI complete...I guess I am unclear on what will make me TSI complete. I have the Pre-Req list from UT and the only Math for their BSN program is Statistics. It can be taken as Math 1342 or Psych 2317. This is considered college level math, correct? So...If I can take this class, then I will be TSI complete, correct? I am worried I am going to take this and then be told I need another Math. Any thoughts?

Psych 2317 will meet a statistics requirement not a math requirement. I know that is confusing but that is the way it is. It isnt considered a math class by admissions it is a statistics course for research procedures. You must take a college level math class to meet your core requirement at any Texas college. Math 310 is a developmental class and will meet the TSI requirement but wont meet a core college math requirement. UT-h requires TSI completion for admission that translates to your math requirement must be done. If a school says you need 0310 then you do unless you test out of it. If you are uncertain as to the validity of this info then call UT-H. I am sure they will gladly answer your question and save you from confusion. Good luck!

Mathwizard is incorrect. I was accepted to UT Houston for the fall and I took Stats through the psych department as well. UT DOES count this as your math requirement. I know this because it was my only "Math" class. When you apply you get a UTLink account and you are sent a transcript review. UtLink shows me as TSI complete and the review stated that stats WAS counted as my math requirement. As a side note it also completed my math requirement for my associates degree which made me "core complete."

Awesome!!! Thank you so much!!! I read your post and actually received an email back from UT Houston today. They verified what you said. Core complete makes me TSI complete without having an actual "math" class. Although I didn't take a "math" class my Statistics class does count!!! Yeah! Thanks Rachel!!! Also...congrats on being accepted to UT! I am applying in January and am SO excited/nervous about it. Do you mind me asking how the application process was for you? Were you accepted your first time? What was your Science GPA? Please don't feel like you have to answer. I am just curious...

Thanks again!

The application process is pretty straight forward. I applied, got an interview and waited (that was the hard part) I was accepted my first time (thank God!) which I wasn't really expecting because my class is the first one they only accepted 80 people instead of 125. My science GPA was something like 3.5. Hope that helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!!

That is so awesome that you got in your first time!!! I have been having a mini-freak out about not having a 4.0 in my sciences. I have a 3.7 right now and have been wondering if that is even good enough for an interview. I am applying in January for the first time. I am so nervous/excited! I have read so many posts of people that got in and had a 4.0 in their science classes. It has made me SO nervous! I keep second guessing myself and wondering if I should re-do my science class that I got a B in so that I can try for an A. I think I am making myself a little crazy. hahahhahaha. Congrats again on your acceptance. That's awesome!

Have you taken your NET or whatever test they are requiring now?? For my class you HAD to have at least a 70 on the NET before you could even get an interview, No matter what your GPA was. Just a heads up!

I haven't taken the NET exam yet but I have purchased the study guide. I think I mentioned it in my original post but I have been out of school for ten years and am completing all of my pre-reqs right now. I will have the 40 pre-reqs (that UT requires for their application process) at the end of December. I hope to apply in January, 2010 for the Fall, 2010 semester. I will have the 60 pre-req hours completed by that time. Has anyone heard of the average Science GPA they will accept? (just to get an interview) I know their application process says you have to have a 3.0...but I am sure they aren't calling a lot of candidates with a 3.0 since it's such a competitive program. Or am I wrong? What do you think? Has anyone heard of the average science GPA's that make it to the interview phase??
