Re: Tyler area - Trinity Mother Frances Hospital
I grew up in a town near Tyler (Whitehouse to be specific). I had a nice childhood and enjoyed the good schools in Whitehouse. As I got older though, I became more aware of the deep seeded racial and class issues.
True, we have them in our bigger metro area city where I live now, but it is more diluted. Tyler is a small to medium sized town full of people with lots of NEW money (a little bit of "old" money, but not a lot) who are all too eager to show it off and boy...they don't miss an opportunity. There are still those who feel people of a certain color should "know their place." I have a relative who, as a teenager, got GROUNDED for riding in a car with someone of a different race.
I go back now to visit my Mom and it makes me want to puke...the money, the class issues, etc. The whole Rose Festival is just a big gaudy show of money and it parades right through a part of town that people frown on for 99.9% of the year and wouldn't even go through after dark. Girls wearing 20K dresses as they wave drunkenly from their floats...gag gag gag. I won't even tell you what I really think.
Going to Brookshires is a major life event and better not go without your "bling" on.
I love the anonymity of the big city now and would never go back. Too bad though because it is a beautiful place to live with the lakes and all.
