When you say you haven't heard "glowing" things about TWU, what do you mean? I've heard this from three different people now but haven't seen anything concrete to back the claim up. Can you enlighten us? I'm considering going there this spring, so any information you could provide would be appreciated.

It definitely wasn't my GPA that didn't allow me to get in. Had they have taken into account that I was able to maintain a 3.9 + GPA while juggling a full time job at one of the big 4 global accounting firms, three children (ages 8, 3, and 20 months), and still manage to build a small business (hair and nail salon) for my wife and manage the daily processes of it too, then perhaps they would have let me in. Did I gripe and wine about not getting in? YOU BET I DID!!! But hey, it's time to move on. TWU....here I come!!!!
i guess i better hop on the TWU train since i just got my acceptance letter today. i don't think i have anything going for me BESIDES gpa to get me into UTHSC.

TWU Houston and TCU both have programs for people who hold BS degrees that will put you through nursing school in 14 mos and then you will also have a BSN.

Thats the ones I would check into if you already have a BS

Default accelerated BSN at TCU

I start the TCU accelerated BSN program in May 2005. It is 15 months (not 14) and you are correct in the fact that the accelerated track is only offered to people who already hold degrees..... this fact alone significantly narrows the applicant pool.

The tuition is about $40K (private university = higher tuition) for the program which may scare some people at first - I just think about getting out of school quicker and having that much more time to work and payoff the debt (debt for school can be tax deducted [not sure about his - my hubby and the taxman work out all this $$ stuff] and the interest rate is low... plus it is not like you are not going to have to take out loans no matter which school you attend). Getting out of school quicker is a benefit for some students who plan on applying to other (lengthy) graduate programs that require a year experience on top of the BSN <-- my situation.

The class is small - only about 30 students and grades are important (duh ). One more thing about the program, if you are accepted, you sign an agreement that you will not work while in school since it is an accelerated program. They estimate the weekly time committment to school is 64 hours per week. Personally, I don't have a problem with this agreement as I cannot imagine trying to juggle 64 hours of school a week and then working (scared I would make mistakes because I was tired and possibly hurt someone.... maybe I am just old and get tired easier now)

I think there are only 2 accelerated programs in TX: TCU in FW and TWU (but you cannot do it at Denton - have to go to Houston). I did not check programs outside the DFW area since I cannot attend them.

Hope this helps,
Christine

When I went to TWU, there was an attitude amongst the teachers and the students that TWU is better than other programs. The instructors time and time again would tell us how lucky we were to be at TWU, and how, when all was said and done, we'd know so much more than even the doctors. This was several years ago, mind you, so it may be different now. But I think this attitude might be a reason why there is so much negativity toward TWU.

Like I said, this was several years ago--things might be different. So if you go to TWU, please don't take offense; I am just speaking about my experience with their BSN program.

In the scheme of things, it really doesn't matter where you get your education--all that matters is what you do with it!!

Do whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?????? LOL that's funny - Iv'e been at TWU for 3 years now and I have yet to hear ANYTHING like THAT!!!!!!!! Nor have I ever even been given that impression - I'm at Parkland....

but that's funny. As far as negativity towards TWU, I havn't really heard anything negative either before I went in or since I started other than that they are disorganized to the nth degree - THAT I can agree with, but I think thats the case in any program that is overladed and striving to keep up with the changing times.

I've already noticed this even though I haven't started there yet! The director or something was all, "Now that you are in the BEST nursing program in Houston..blahblahblah".. I was like.. ooookay.

I am starting TWU Parkland campus in a couple of days and I am scared shutless. I heard it's hard, but then again they all are. They should be. Nursing isn't for the faint of heart.

When it came down to it, I got accepted to UTA and TWU for a BSN and El Centro for an ADN. I chose TWU because it seemed to be a better fit for me. The best thing you can do is talk to current students and faculty for whichever schools you are interested in and go with what feels right for you. Never ever believe in second-hand information - everyone has a different experience based on what they put into something.

Good luck in Nursing School!

Default Re: Texas Nursing School
OK...this thread is a few years old, but hey...better late than never, right? I am just wanting to find out about TWU from those who (presumably) have now finished. What did you guys think? Did you run into students from other schools that had bad/good experiences? I have been accepted at Baylor Dallas and TWU Parkland for this spring and THINK I am going to choose TWU (have to decide by 12/15!!!). The only problem is that I haven't had an orientation or tour, etc of TWU yet, only Baylor so I don't have anything to compare them. I do know from my one semester at TWU and just the app process with Baylor that TWU seems to be a bit behind on communication and organization...and their financial aid stuff seems to be a little messed up. But what else is new, right?
