Plano Nurses....


My husband and I are looking at Plano real estate. We are planning to move within the next two years, as the housing market in NY is still high, and the schools are not so hot. I currently work as an infusion nurse in NY, and I was wondering how the job situation is for RN's in PLano. Also any info about schools, neighborhoods, etc... would be great as well.

Plano is a one of several nicer NE suburbs of Dallas. It appears Plano/McKinney/Frisco are the hot spots for those wanting to move out of Dallas proper. Hard to go wrong with any of the three, all are less than 30mi from downtown, have great public and private school yet still have all of the restaurants/shopping you'd want.

Numerous hospitals in the area and there are no lack of jobs I can assure you that.

Actually the school systems in Texas rate near the bottom nationally. Sad but true. One of the biggest and richest states, and their schools rate so low. Amazing. Plano schools have a lot of room to improve. Frisco is farther behind Plano. Plenty of work available though for nurses. Mckinney might be growing but it will never be a hotspot.

Before you go and move to another part of Texas, research the Metroplex (that's what we call the DFW area here).

http://www.lisd.net for Lewisville

Find yourself a map...research the area well. Plano has great schools, as does Lewisville and Frisco. The closer you get to Dallas or Fort Worth, however, the less money there is to spend on students. In general, the larger the community, the better the schools.

All of our districts are "independent school districts".

I have to disagree with level 1 trauma rn...McKinney and some parts of Plano are much more than 30 minutes away from Downtown. And you have to drive on I 75, which is a terrible road to have to travel every day.

I live 26 miles north of my employer, jump on I 35 and can be there in 25 minutes.

You're right, but that's only an issue if you have to go Downtown. I'm happy living in McKinney and working in Plano. I "did my time" at a big Dallas hospital and now am more than happy to work in suburbia.

Oh I didn't say "30minutes" I said 30miles.


Depending on traffic it will take 30minutes to 1hr to downtown from Plano/McKinney/Frisco.

There is also the tollway if you do not like I75.

Guys...

Isn't Allen is supposed to have an excellent school system? And I hear wonderful things about PISD...don't know about Frisco or McKinney, but everything in this area seems to be geared towards and focused on the kids and their sports and activities. Very kid oriented.

I don't have kids that young, but the CCCCD has been decent to work with...

Very kid oriented almost to a pathological obsession in these communities. Soccer moms, Football moms,Acrobatic moms. And their overly concerned fathers. Really a frightening stepfordish like scenario...

LOL HEY!! I did NOT say that! It is true for some though...they are very family oriented.

One thing I noticed about TX, the money spent here is incredible. And there are at least 4 giant shopping malls within 10 miles [20 minutes drive] from me. Super everything...Target, Walmart, whatever. It's super. The kids have a lot of advantages. 16 year olds driving brand new Escalades and stuff. Now TX is considering raising the driving age to 18...anyway...

But, in all honesty it has paid off for some of those kids...the ones with talent. One of the gold medal gymnasts in Bejing is from near here and trained in Plano...and another girl who won the all around gold in another Olympics is from Allen, TX.

I have a neighbor who is one of those soccer moms, but her kid will likely have college paid for...by soccer...cool for her...talented kid.

Anyway, there is a lot of opportunity here...and a LOT of hospitals. I have 2 huge ones within 2 miles of me and if I expand that radius the number goes up exponentially! Also, be aware...as an out of state nurse, you'll have to take a Jurisprudence test. There's another thread about that on here...since you currently work, I don't think you'll need to take the refresher class like I did. Good luck!

I don't have kids, but I have to disagree with this statement. I live in the DFW area, and I would not hesitate to send my kids (if I had them) to any school in McKinney, Plano, Frisco, Allen, or Southlake. They all have excellent reputations and tons of AP courses in the high schools. I also have to disagree that McKinney will never be a hotspot. I mean, it will never be a "big" city like Dallas, but it is has definitely become one of THE suburbs to live in the Dallas area. If you are into suburbia, that is!
