Galveston is yucky. You don't want to go there. Take a look at Clear Lake. It's really nice there and I had clinicals at their hospital and liked it.

I am originally from Kerrville, the heart of the hill country. It's a beautiful area surrounded by hills with the Guadalupe River running through it. It's approximately one hour from San Antonio, 1 1/2 from Austin & 3 from Corpus Christi. Centrally located in southern Texas. There is a hospital in Kerrville & one in Fredericksburg, both of which I've worked in. Be wary of relocating to Fredericksburg, though. They like all the visitors but like for them to go home. My son lives in Tyler in northeast Tx. It's a growing area with several hospitals within Tyler and surrounding communities. Though I now live in Kentucky, my heart remains in the Great Lone Star State!! Good luck with your search.

I'm fixxing to graduate in April from UTMB located in galveston, TExas. I was born here, and lived on the island many years, and when I lived on the mainland, it was 15min away. I feel I know Galveston pretty good, and yes it has some dirty, run down parts but the hsitory and character in Galveston far out beats all the other areas around. There are many aspects of galveston, historic district, the homes on the water or canal, the beach(no where near Cali) and the Universities. I think the island is a wonderful place to live, shopping sucks, but its isolated away from the hussle of a larger city, and whether people acknowledge it or not, the seawall is very toursist friendly and looks alot better than Daytona Beach, FL.- their beaches. Also, UTMB pays very well for new grads and I LOVE UTMB>

Shirley, since you love UTMB and Galvestion, do you plan on working there when you graduate? Just wondering! I had clinicals there for two classes and also worked there for 6 or 7 months and was not impressed. I am a 2004 graduate from the program you are in now so I lived in Galveston for almost 2 years and as you can see from my first post, I do not like Galveston!

I honestly just *never* felt safe there and carried mace around with me whenever I left the dorm. I hate that you can't even go to Subway, Walgreen's, Wendy's or take a stroll on the seawall or the beach without being harassed in some way. That has happened to me at all those locations and then some! Galveston is a good place to visit during a mini vacation but I could not recommend it as a good place to actually live in. Our project in Community was a real eye opener with the data we got about the city and don't get me started on the nursing program there!

I am moving to Tennessee to bring my son closer to his grandparents so unfor. no I am not staying. If we did not plan to move, yes I would stay at UTMB. I don't understand the way many people feel about Galveston. My husband moved here from Virginia after graduating from PT school and has worked at Shriners for almost 8 years. this was his first time living in Texas and I asked him yesterday if he thought Galveston was "dangerous" he replied that he thought the "bad" sections were, but other than that it was okay. He doesn't think as highly of Galveston as I do though, but it could be how we were raised. He's from Tennessee and its alot different than Texas. I have never NOT felt safe, but it could be that I've been here all my life. I know a few girls in my class from other parts of Texas that also don't like Galveston. But you know, its all subjective and it's just what you're looking for. I already told my husband, I would love to retire in Galveston and live on the water. Like I said, it might be because I've lived here or @ here all my life and don't see the "dangers" people from the outside see. It's not perfect, but I personally don't like Clear lake --OVER CROWNED BIG TIME and the surrounding areas are too (lived there 2years). These areas are newer, more effluent, and nicer, but not for me. THat may be the reason I like Galveston. But I would say, for those with children, I don't think GISD is that great of a school district and would consider another area if your looking for a good school district for kids.

Just be like the rest of the Texans who think "gun control" means hitting your target!

I love Texas too. I moved to Tyler in December after graduating from School, and I love it. It's the size town that has things to occupy your free time, but have a home town feel also, and I love my hospital that I work for specifically and have heard goodthings about the others here as well. I think it's a great place to live! Wish you luck with your decision of moving...
