Depends on where in Texas you are asking about? In Austin, no.

The DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth area) isn't in a critical shortage situation or anything of that nature, but there are still plenty of nursing jobs around here. The abundance of positions tend to be in unpopular areas such as nursing homes, med/surg, etc. Specialty areas are highly coveted, so you will face competition if you want to work in certain units.

Hey Y'all - Texas is too big and diverse to have any sort of "one size fits all" answer - LOL.

In a state that ranges from extreme frontier (< 5 people per sq mile) to highly urbanized and everything in between -- only one thing is for sure - we've never been able to fulfill our nursing 'demand' through Texas nursing schools only. We've always relied on 'imports' and undoubtedly will continue to do so for the forseeable future!

I am seeing a real slow down in hiring new grads. Probably more due to the expense of getting them up to speed than anything else. Experienced RNs can still get jobs just about any where. In the Houston and San Antonio areas, new hospitals are opening up and they have to be staffed -- nuff said?
