No luck in the job hunting!!

Hello all!

I graduated from an ADN program in Aug (well Nov b/c I had to retake HESI), took my Boards in Dec and passed and have yet to land a job. I don't know what else to do I have applied from Houston on up to the Conroe area. When I call the Nurse Recruiters office they all say that they don't hire New Graduates unless they come in through the internship. I don't understand this when you go online and there are at least 100 nurse positions open for the hospital and they only accept 10-20 GN's into the internship. Why are they saying it's a nurse shortage when they won't even hire nurses who want to work. So why do I have to go through an internship now when so many before me did not and they are very good nurses. We have at least 8 nursing schools in my area form ADN to BSN and they only let 20 GN's for an internship. I am just frustrated b/c I worked hard to get through nursing school and all I ever wanted to do was to become an RN and now I can't even find a job when it's jobs out there. If anyone knows of any places who are hiring new grads now in the Houston area or close by please let me know. Thanks for listening!

I have a friend in my nursing class who had difficulties getting a job because of one canceling her internship and another not wanting an ADN nurse as a new GN. She found a position in a home health agency, which pays rather well. It's not what she wants to do ultimately, but with so many new graduate nurses in this area, it may not always be possible to grab that hospital job right away. She enjoys what she's doing and is gaining a lot of expierience, which she can use to get that dream job of hers in due time. There are a lot of home health agencies and nursing homes which often give on the job training. It may not be what you really want to do in nursing, but you do learn a lot.

Thanks so much for replying. This sounds like the route I may have to go.

A good place to try would be North Cypress Medical Center. They are hiring new nurses as long as they have already passed the boards. Speak to the chief Nurse recruiter. Their website is below

http://www.ncmc-hospital.com/

Best of luck.

Ike flooded Houston with tons of well trained and experienced UTMB and now Shriner's nurses. They, therefore, do not have to spend resources this year to train GN's.
Try San Antonio or Dallas. They are looking for nurses. You can come back later if you want.
I would never suggest a new nurse should go out on a leg to do home health. Firstly, you have no idea what you are doing, secondly, if something goes wrong, you have no support.

Ditto ditto ditto! Houston has never had a shortage of new nurses- we have a shortage of experienced nurses and shah is absolutely right about home health. As a new nurse, you may think you know it all (I know I did), but the reality is that you don't and you can't risk your license that way.

I am sorry you are having a hard time. I think most of the people that graduated with me in December were fortunate enough to find a job. I was offered a job at HCA Women's Hospital and Texas Children's Hospital. I would just apply EVERYWHERE. A couple of people were hired on at LBJ, Conroe, St. Joseph's and St. Lukes. I think one was hired on at Memorial Hermann Med Center.

Hello all,

Just wanted to let everyone know that I received a job at Methodist San Jacinto on the Med-Surg Floor. So my perseverance paid off! Good Luck to all in your job hunting. Apply everywhere and call those recruiters.
