NICU RN to move to houston/woodlands area

Hey yall! well i am originally from texas and have made my way out here to sunny san diego, california! I love it here but my rent is rediculous and i am getting older and want to buy a house. I think i would like to end up in the woodlands area. so my fiance and i have decided to move around june of 2008. I am wondering how the hospitals are there and what the pay would be. I have 4 years of Neonatal ICU experience. I was an LVN for 1 1/2 yrs before that and worked adults. Is is better to work in the med center? vs the woodlands area? pay? is there a type of transportation i could get on to ride to the med center so i wouldnt have to deal w traffic or parking??? any info is appreciated thanks!!!

I think that if you want to live in the Woodlands, then find a hospital there too. Dont commute to the med center. Memorial Hermann has a hospital in the Woodlands, and they are a wonderful system to work for. (IMO)

I live 15 minutes away from my job. Other people I work with live 45min-1hour away from it. I dont understand how you can do that for a 12 hour shift, and then come back to work in the morning. But, it can be done.

However, since you do NICU - it seems that all sick babies end up in the med center. Something to think about.

I think that there are carpools/vanpools that you can sign up for. Most hospitals have information on them.

thanks! well i think that mem hermann has a nicu in the woodlands also! i think i might do a travel nursing position for awhile just to get me started and i could use the extra money. but that would only be temporary. i am pretty sure we have settled on the woodlands though. will the pay be less there or about the same???

i heard there is a lot to do there. we live in san diego now and its absolutely a blast! so much going on and always good weather! i know it will be very different but its time for a cheaper price of living!

i'm from houston about to move to SD. i graduated w/ my bsn in may 07. i'm looking for a NICU job in san diego. UCSD is done w/ their intake process and sharp mary birch is full. i applied to scripps, balboa, and rady already. am i missing anyone?

Most hospitals in the Texas Medical Center pay a little more because of the higher cost of living near there and the horrible traffic. The more sick and premature babies get transferred to the TMC NICUs. The Woodlands is a nicer place to buy a house IMHO because it's a nice suburb and has less crime than around TMC.

HELLO! I also live in Sunny San Diego, & I agree with you regarding the High Cost of Living! I too, am considering leaving California for a place with lower cost of living, as well as affordable housing. I have thought about Houston, Texas or maybe Orlando or Jacksonville, Florida. I have heard that housing in Houston costs about 65% less than here in San Diego. The only thing that San Diego has going for it at the moment is the good weather. I feel that the rents here are getting "Way Out of Hand"! What are The Pros/Cons of Texas compared to California? What is the weather like? What are the best /worst areas of Houston to live? I would Love to hear it all straight from the HORSES MOUTH. How long have you lived here in san Diego? I have been here for 16 years, & it is starting to get old. Would love to hear from you. Thanks In advance!
