NCLEX Eligibility

In order to take the NCLEX examination , you must apply for nursing license from your state board of nursing. That board will determine whether or not you meet its criteria for NCLEX examination-eligibility. You must then register to take the exam.

What requirements must I fulfill in order to obtain a nursing license?

This may vary by state, but according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing , the minimum requirements for both registered nurse (RN) and licensed practical nurse (LPN) candidates are:
  • You must graduate, or provide verification of completion and eligibility for graduation, from a state-approved nursing program.
  • You must pass the NCLEX® examination.
  • You must self-report any and all criminal convictions, chemical dependencies, and functional ability deficits.
How can I contact my State Board of Nursing?

Read our Complete List of State Boards of Nursing for contact information for each state.

LICENSURE BY EXAMINATION

Please note majority of the states require foreign nurses to pass CGFNS before taking the NCLEX-RN. Texas requires that you pass the CGFNS.
