Hello all. Congrats to all those who have been accepted in the porgram. It must feel Amazing!! I graduated from Cy-Fair college with my Associate Degree in Science this past May. I applied to the program last semester and was unable to get in. So now I am in the process of taking a few of my courses over so that my B's will become A's and also retaking the HESI to boost up those scores as well. The first time I took it I scored a 92% in the math and an 81% in the reading. I was curious to know (If you do not mind) your scores on the HESI and also on the 12 point scale. This is an extremely competitive and stressful process that I am hoping will pay off for me soon. Thank You for your time and GOOD LUCK to you all while in the program.

That's nice to know. So is this exam just a pass/fail kind or does it give you a letter grade if you're trying to test out of it because you've taken it at another college? I'm just curious. Have you already taken pharmacology? Is it case study focus, or knowing the implications, responsibilities, adverse effects, interactions, MOAs etc...?
I believe it's a pass/fail type of thing where you have to get a certain score or above... try searching the Texas forums for Cy-fair Pharm test and some results will pop up. I think you have to score over a 800 or something, I can't really remember the exact score. I'm taking Pharm right now at Kingwood in addition to all of the other Nursing I classes. For me, our Pharm has not been hard, alot of writing for the most part, and knowing the adverse effects, drug-drug interactions, pharmacokinectics and that sort of thing was went over in alot of our assignments and test. I think I may come out of this class with an A, at least I hope I do. I think if you choose to take Pharm with Cy-fair also, you guys won't have it your first semester... I think I remember reading that some where on here. I believe it's either before your second semester or concurrent with it. I just think it's crazy that even if you take Pharm with another school in the Lone Star system, Cy-fair won't accept it... but they do from what I hear, produce great nurses so they are doing something right!

Good luck to all of you.

Hey Candy 82,

I saw your post and thought i would respond. I am in my first semester of nursing school at kingwood and my points were 11.789, the cut off was 11.4. The cut off for north harris was 11.1 this year. I believe the one for cyfair was right around the same as the one for kingwood. Hopefully you will get in soon, good luck to you! Hope this helps

does anyone know anything about the varicella vaccine? What if you had the chickenpox as a child. If now record, how do you prove you had them? Does Cy Fair require the vaccine to be administered? I know some colleges only need a letter from you stating that you had them.
thanks

Hi Luckymama!

If you have had chickenpox and you still have the same doctor, you can try to have him write a letter. I'm in the same situation as you, I had chickenpox already when I was younger. My pediatric is probably no longer alive, and if he were, I doubt he would have a record of it, since back then everything was done on paper. What I am going to have to do is to go to a clinic and have blood taken for titer test to prove my immunity to it. You might want to do the same thing. I don't know if a parent's note is acceptable for proof, but you can always ask.

CyFair does require the varicella vaccine (which is the same as chickenpox) for the program. So, if you've already had a bad enough case of chickenpox, then you might not need this vaccine. I posted all the immunizations and tests needed in a previous post, check pg 2 on this thread.

Hi Candy!

I was told by someone who works in the nursing department that the reading comprehension is what matters most for the HESI score. They will only look at your math score if there's one spot left and you are tied with someone else. Then the person with the highest math score gets in. She also told me although the website says to get in you need at least a 70 (or 75), you should aim for higher. She said it was a rare occasion for someone to get into Cyfair with a reading comprehension score below 80. When pressed by all of the pre-nursing students, she told us to aim for at least an 85 and we should be safe as far as previous entrance statistics go, but that might not be the case when we apply.

My reading comprehension score was 85.11. My total score was 11.4044 out of 12 and I was able to get in the program. This is not even my best score either. I took it at HCC and was able to get a 94 in reading comprehension, but since they don't take HCC I couldn't transfer it to the application. In the end it didn't matter since the 85.11 was good enough to get in.

The CPR class I listed previously was good. The man who taught it was funny and kept everyone entertained. He had mannequins for everyone in the class and then some. The time seemed to go by fast and before you know it, you're certified.

Yeah, I enjoyed the CPR class as well. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Time went by pretty fast and met some nice people...

I have a question. Does anybody know what Cyfair's first semester schedule looks like? The curriculum shows the classes but I would like to know what classes are taken online and what times are the others scheduled. TIA.

CreoleFromtheBoot:

This is what I was able to speculate based on the Fall schedule:

RNSG 1105 starts 08/24/09 ends 10/16/09 is on TW 9:00 - 11:30am or 12:30-3:00pm
RNSG 1209 starts 08/24/09 ends 10/16/09 is on TH 9:00 - 11:00am
RNSG 1115 starts 08/24/09 ends 12/13/09 is on M 9:00 - 11:30am or 12:30-3:00pm
RNSG 1144 starts 10/19/09 ends 12/13/09 is on TW 9:00 - 11:30am or 12:30-3:00pm
RNSG 1146 starts 10/19/09 ends 11/13/09 or starts 11/16/09 ends 12/13/09 it is a distance education course offered online, just choose (if you get to) the date you want to take it.

I'm sure we'll get something during orientation.

To all the nurses who are currently in the CyFair nursing program that started in the Fall, do you have the Summers off, or do you take courses during the summer also?

thanks djNyla

I would love this schedule cuz I would be able to put the boys on the bus and head off to school instead of having to put them in before and after school programs... save some money! At least for the first semester. I keep reading this program is a four semester program but every curriculum I see there are at least five, so Im also curious to know if we will have the summer off. And if so, how does that work?
