Life-Long Dream to Become a Nurse!

I am a single 30 yr-old working mother in the business field and my life-long dream has been to become an RN. I looked into going back to school several years (10) ago, but was discouraged when most of the RN programs required full-time commitments.
I must work while going back to school, so if anyone knows of any schools or hospitals in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that offer the ADN program part-time, I would love to know about it!!!! Or, if anyone has any suggestions how I can get into the nursing field to obtain my RN, I would greatly appreciate the feedback.

Thank you for your time.

Vickie-

If it's your lifelong dream, some way it will work out. I collected overdue accounts with my small kids in the car (not the smartest thing looking back) to go to school.

You are going to have to get your "basics" done, and most of them can be done on-line or at night/weekend. Start there.

Doors will open, and there will be a way. Don't give up your dream!

Good luck.

Vickie,
About 3 years ago I was in the same position. I had put off getting my nursing degree for years because I couldn't afford to quit working full-time. There are not any part-time RN programs in the DFW area, but I found a program called Eline: http://www.eline.tamucc.edu/ The program offers a lot of flexibility and I continued to work full-time for the first year of the program, but there are so many clinical hours that it just got too hard to work full-time and I had to drop down to working part-time. Many of the students in the program work full-time, it just takes longer to complete the program if you work full-time. Eline may be an option for you. One major drawback is that most of the clinical hours have to be done out of town so you have to travel for clinicals. You can send me a private message with questions. I will be graduating in December from the program.

I'm not single, so I couldn't get any assistance, but I know there are programs out there that help single moms get financial assistance for school. Call the Texas Workforce Commission or contact AHEC (I can't remember what it stands for). They should be able to point you in the right direction to get assistance.

Like the other post said, you priority right now is completing the pre-reqs and you can get a lot of them done online or through distance learning. The nursing programs in this area are very competitive and you will need to have a very high GPA to get in, so your goal is to make A's in all of your pre-req classes.

If you really want to become a nurse, don't wait any longer. Get registered for a class or two in the fall and get the ball rolling.

Thank you soooo much for the response! I really appreciate the information. I guess the plan now is to start working on the pre-req. classes. Do you know of any good on-line schools that I will not have any issues with the classes transferring over to one of the ADN schools here in this area?

I will send you a separate message to ask more questions about the Eline program.

Thanks again for your help!

You may also want to take your pre-reqs at a local community college.. Many community colleges offer evening, weekend, and online classes for working adults.

hi,

I agree with the others, if you really want it you can do it. I just finished and had to work full time all during school. You may have to sacrifice weekends and some other things, but it can be done!!
