Houston Jobs?


I live in Houston, and I'm thinking about trying to get into HCC's nursing program in fall '10. I was looking through this board and I'm kind of worried about job opportunities in Houston based on some posts/comments. I don't want to change my major and career plans if there aren't even any jobs in the area--do ya'll know a lot of new ADN grads that are having problems finding jobs? Is anyone even hiring new ADNs anymore, or do most places only hire BSNs?
Thanks for any input or advice you can give me.

Most places hire ADNs and depending on the unit, there are plenty of jobs.

Word is my unit is 38 nurses short just on days.

No worries Hon... Houston population is still growing and new hospitals are opening up in all geographic areas. They need more nurses to staff all those beds. A few hospitals only hire BSNs, but there will be plenty of jobs out there for you when you graduate.

(And the unit's fairly short on nights, too...We just tend to pick up more extra days and have more full timers working the 7p-7a shift.)

Just don't apply to Magnet status hospitals as a new grad ADN and you'll be fine. All the ADNs in my graduating class found jobs. You may just get asked the "Why did you choose to get an Associate's degree?" question in the interview, haha.

We're trying to get Magnet-ed again. I HATE MAGNET. It is NOT a nurse friendly process at allll.

I'm hoping to go part time myself asap!

What's a magnet status hospital--ones like the big ones in the Medical Center?
I really don't care where I work (especially at first), and I appreciate the reassurance. I just want to make sure that I'm not being incredibly stupid by stopping my engineering degree!

http://www.nursecredentialing.org/Ma...mOverview.aspx Basically a lot of hoops to jump through just to say you're a Magnet hospital and the general public doesn't know what it means anyway..and I highly doubt docs and anyone but nurses know.

Magnets don't like to hire new grad ADNs (Something about having a high percentage of BSN grads.) - they've hired a few, but it's not common. They've turned down people simply because they were going to graduate with their ADN and not a BSN. (If you're an established nurse, you can get hired at a magnet with an ADN much more easily.)

But there's plenty of hospitals around without that status who hire ADNs. So it's not like that degree will box you in.

Don't let Magnet status deter you from applying to any hospital you'd want to work for... in fact, I'd rather apply to a hospital with Magnet status. Magnet status is afforded to hospitals who support and promote their nurses. As an ADN they might even provide more assistance for your advancement than non-Magnet hospitals.
