Re: Which hospitals claim to be on a hiring freeze?
I am sorry to say that it is a fact that many hospitals are hiring a minimal number of new grads if any. Many gov hospitals are laying off nurses. I cannot be specific to Texas but do know this issue is valid throughout the states. Many tertiary facilities are not subject to this because they have better funding and resources.
Note that in many hospitals the nursing shortage is not from a lack of new grads, rather a lack of seasoned nurses to precept those new nurses, and or resources to train them. Look at the ANA website for updates on new funding plans to address these concerns.
My opinion is that you should not wait until after graduation to start scouting out where you are going to work. Call recruiters at hospitals of interest and ask them for guidance in their application process. You may also want to look into extern programs. Also, some hospitals only hire new grads several times per year.
I.H.S. may be a good program to look into in Texas. I read that they are receiving gov funding directed at training new nurses.
Sorry for the frustrating news. I didn't want to answer your post but I don't want you to miss out on any opportunities. I wish you the best.
