Which hospitals claim to be on a hiring freeze?

Please post if you have heard of any hospitals that are on a hiring freeze and how you obtained this information. There is a lot of buzz going on around my school among the May 09 grads afraid they won't get a job and hearing that so and so isn't hiring. Also, I suspect that some hospitals may say they have a hiring freeze but this does not apply to new graduate internship spots. Please share what you know!

Texas Children's is in a freeze. I was told by my nurse educator, and the director of my unit confirmed it at a meeting a couple weeks back. I had an interview with Memorial Hermann in November for an intership program. I was called the day of my interview and was told that they were in a hiring freeze and were not hiring new grads. Only one person from my graduating class got on with Memorial Hermann, and that was before the hiring freeze started in November. Not sure if it is still going on there or not.

I am sorry to say that it is a fact that many hospitals are hiring a minimal number of new grads if any. Many gov hospitals are laying off nurses. I cannot be specific to Texas but do know this issue is valid throughout the states. Many tertiary facilities are not subject to this because they have better funding and resources.

Note that in many hospitals the nursing shortage is not from a lack of new grads, rather a lack of seasoned nurses to precept those new nurses, and or resources to train them. Look at the ANA website for updates on new funding plans to address these concerns.

My opinion is that you should not wait until after graduation to start scouting out where you are going to work. Call recruiters at hospitals of interest and ask them for guidance in their application process. You may also want to look into extern programs. Also, some hospitals only hire new grads several times per year.

I.H.S. may be a good program to look into in Texas. I read that they are receiving gov funding directed at training new nurses.

Sorry for the frustrating news. I didn't want to answer your post but I don't want you to miss out on any opportunities. I wish you the best.

I know for a fact that Hermann in the med center is not on a hiring freeze. Myself and lots of other classmates have been hired for the June 2009 internship. Something like 16 are hired into NICU, 4 to 8 in ER, a handful in women's services, quite a few in ICU... and that is just the ones I know about so I'm sure there are more. From what I understand, many units at Hermann TMC actually hired too few grads in Dec 08 and are now hiring more this May to make up for it. But this is specific to the TMC location and I have heard that satellite locations are on a freeze.

I heard that MD Anderson also plans to hire lots of new grads.

I keep hearing different things about TCH, but since their apps don't normally come out until mid-April anyway it is hard to know now.

Hermann TMC is definitely not on a hiring freeze and we need NICU people.

New gradwise..it's pretty much too late everywhere besides smaller hospitals that are not affiliated with huge systems such at Memorial Hermann, Methodist, SLEH.

TCH is not on a hiring freeze, either. New gradwise...too late.

Well, I guess the moral of the story is to apply everywhere. THey Memorial Hermann I was trying to get into was Memorial City. Also, TCH IS in a hiring freeze in some units, then. I know in mine (ER) they are not hiring any new people.

Try St. Joseph's. They hired a classmate for a new grad spot in the ER last time (December grad) around. For the other hospitals, you may have just applied too late. MH stopped accepting applications really, really early for the June intern group.

I don't understand how TCH remains staffed in the NICU. From what I was able to gather they only hired like one or two new grads the past few semesters. Then again, I've heard that their nurses basically never leave, so maybe they just don't have many openings. Or maybe they just don't like hiring new grads and prefer to transfer in experienced NICU nurses

They hired NO new grads the semester I graduated. After my interview with them, it is definitely no longer my dream (or desire) to work there anymore!
