Help! New grad looking for a job!!!

by wanjik

Are there any hospitals in Houston still hiring new grads? All the ones I know are not hiring again till May/June, but I don't want to wait that long. I need to start working ASAP! I will take my NCLEX on Jan 30th, and I'm hoping it'll be easier for me once I have my license. Does anyone know of any hospital that's still hiring?

I've decided that if I can't get a job ASAP in a hospital, I'll start applying to nursing homes. Alternatively I might work as a tech/patient care assistant until May. But if someone has any info that could be of help, I'd be very appreciative...

I got an email today that Harris County Community Hospital district is having a hiring fair next week- you could go check that out. I think that career fairs are always the best way to make contacts with people that will hire you (instead of submitting online applications that seem to never go anywhere). Good luck!

From what I hear from my friends that graduated in December is that it was pretty tough to find a job. A lot of the hospitals in the med center put a "hiring freeze" on hiring new GN's due to the economy.

I even talked to the nurse educator's here where I work (st lukes), and they said that the most recent GN class was significantly smaller than what theyve usually had in the past.

Keep applying and keep calling back to get interviews! Sooner or later something will open up!

Everything I have found for Houston hospitals says that they only hire new grads twice yearly--January & June so that everyone can go through orientation together (money saver). Also, I am in the same boat as wanting to continue to work as a tech/aide until I find a "real" job, but after a meeting with my NM last week, I found out that after passing NCLEX, most (if not all) places will NOT allow you to work as a tech/aide/assistant because that is working BELOW the scope of nursing practice and it's illegal to allow a licensed person to work in scope of unlicensed personelle. I hope this helps you! Please keep me updated on your search...I am trying to make the move to Houston after May grad!

Memorial Hermann hires new grads outside of the normal internships - you get an orientation and all that - just not the classes that the interns get.

@ Earthcrosser,

Really? Wow! I'll submit another application. Thanks.

I'll also try Woman's Hospital as well.

Good luck w/ Hermann. When I tried to get a Jan new grad internship in Nov, they said they were past the deadline and I could work as a student. No thanks!

It depends on the unit. NICU does not strictly hire new grads for the internship programs. There are two girls who are new grads, but not interns. They sometimes come with us to class, but often, they're working at the time. You probably need to contact unit managers - the HR department is often busy and has a lot of stuff to do, but managers can give you a heads up about any possibilities for getting a job outside of the normal timeframe for a new grad.

Yeah, November was way too late for the internship program - they cancelled a lot of interviews because positions were filled quickly and they got way more applications than they expected. I think the deadline to apply was sometime early October? Can't really remember the date exactly.
