Help me make a tough decision re:TWU

I have a really tough decision to make and I'm hoping y'all can help.

I have been lurking for a while, and finally got up the nerve to register and post.

I was lucky enough to be accepted by both the Houston and Dallas TWU campuses for Spring 2006 and I need to decide which to attend. I am very familar with the cities, and right now I am divided between the two.

If you have any experience with either campus or the facilities clinicals are held at, could you please let me know what you liked and didn't like about them.

Thanks!
Emily

Ps. I look forward to meeting the other new TWU students here at Orientation or classes.

Considering the thread here on Group One in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I think I'd want to stay as far away from that place as possible.

Default My 2 cents.
I got screwed around by Group One, but I still love Dallas and the State of Texas with every fiber of my being! And this is coming from a politically moderate transplant!!!!

I did not attend either campus, but I have pals who attended TWU-Dallas and TWU-Houston.

They use Parkland Hospital and UTSW and the primary clinical site in Dallas. Parkland is not the best looking hospital, but IMO one of the BEST PLACES IN THE WORLD to learn.

Houston has the largest medical center and grouping of hospitals in the WORLD. MD Anderson is a star and UT-Houston Med Center is really making waves in the medical community.

I did not make it easier for you did I? HEHEHE

Coming from Austin, I think you might find Houston more to you liking socially, even though Dallas is a fun town.

Dallas' traffic is better than Houston's.

Houston is 20 times more humid than Austin or Dallas but the whole state is a sweat box!

Whichever school you choose you will get a great education.

Just because Group One exsits is no reason to cut your nose off to spite your face. For the majority of people Group One is not a problem.

Visit both campuses and see which one you like best. There are no dorms at the Dallas campus - that may be a consideration, I don't know if Houston has them or not. I would look closely at what area of town you willplan to live in in either city, and how the gas costs and public transportation measure up too.

Also - if you know ultimately where you want to work and what you want to do - that might factor into your decision ie: you want to do oncology, go to Houston where MD Anderson is; burn unit - Dallas for Parkland, Pediatrics - Houston - Texas Childrens or Dallas - Childrens...

And look at the demand for your interest area once you are out of school - you might decide to stay in that city.

When people make decisions, and ask others for advice, they consider a wide variety of factors. This person asked for opinions, I gave mine and each person on this thread gave theirs. IMO the more factors you consider the better. This isn't cutting off your nose to spite your face, it's taking different factors into consideration, it's not like choosing Houston would be a *bad* decision.

I'm at TWU Houston and I love the area. The metrorail is great to get around and the hospitals here are world renowned.

Yeah I have to say the Public transportation can be an issue around Dallas. The train goes right to Childrens medical center/parkland - about 3 long blocks from TWU - ordinarily not a problem but when you are hauling a lot of books, laptop etc and the weather is bad, well that's a whole different story.

The bus system in Dallas is a bit strange too - instead of just running up and down major streets, they weave into neighborhoods and take the long way around. You cant take a bus from one end of a mjor street to another in many cases without transferring to another bus and riding to a transit center first...and they wonder why ridership is so low!

There are several people who attend the Dallas campus with me who started out in Houston. They now wish they would have stayed in Houston saying it was a much better experience.
