Help!

by lam1

Hello, I'm totally new to all of this and need some information. I'm currently taking pre-reqs at HCC (A&P, then Pharmacology) in hopes of getting into nursing. I'm 45 years old and don't know if I'm too old to do this or not. I just know I want to be a nurse, so I'm biting the bullet and going back to school. I'm single and working full time and have no idea how difficult it's going to be. Is the ADN program at HCC a good program that will allow me to take the exam for an RN? Is there a waiting list on that program? If I already have a BA, should I go for a BSN? What are the benefits of doing so, etc? I want the quickest route to an RN as possible as I'm not getting any younger!

Any help would be much appreciated. For those of you that are already nurses, I just want to say thank you for all you do everyday!!!!! You are my heroes!

Hmm... I'm not familiar with "HCC" but I can tell you that you're certainly not too old.

There is a post at the top of the Texas Nurses Forum that will aid you in finding info about schools. Check with the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners website to find the NCLEX pass rate for your school. That will give you some idea of how well they prepare their students to pass the exam.

Talk with the advisor at your school to see if they can give you an idea of how many people don't make it through the first year of their program. That will give you a small clue as to the difficulty of the program.

Keep in mind - all nursing schools are difficult and it's that way for a reason. You'll have to be very focused but that doesn't mean that the classes are "hard". They're just different from anything you've done before.

If you already have a bachelor's degree you may be able to go through an accelerated program. Check with the universities in your area to see if one is available.

And relax. You'll be fine.

Hi, you are certianly not too old. As long as you are strong willed to do it, nursing is for all. What I can tell you is that if I have a BA, I won't even try to go thru the ADN route. I'll try accelerated programs. This would depend on you largely. It is hectic but doable. I have a firend that has just graduated from texas tech accelerated program and she thinks it's the best thing that has ever happened to her. Here's the link. You can call them and verify all you need to do.

You can also try other schools like TWU and Univ. of Texas etc
Goodluck!

I'll be graduating in December, when I'll be 48. I hope we're not too old!

I work at a local hospital as a Nurse Tech. A nursing position is waiting on me. You're never too old to follow your bliss.

I don't think there is a nursing program that isn't competitive or difficult. I am 47 and just got accepted to an ADN program after working my butt off for the last couple of years during the prereques. I am also a mother to a nine year old and basically a single parent. You can do it!!!!!
Just Do It!!!!! Good luck!

I agree that you should check out the accelerated programs. I also had a BA and I got my BSN (in Massachusetts) and it was a smart move although I was torn at the time. You will work very hard for the time you are in the program but then you come out with your BSN and it will save you a lot of time in the long run. By the way.... you are NOT too old!!

I was told that the average age of women entering nursing school is 42. most women wait until their kids are grown to enter college. Good luck!
