Considering Relocation To Austin

I am considering a move to the Austin area...I live and practice as a surgical RN in Las Vegas now. I am looking for a more family oriented city with good values and friendly sense of community. Can anyone comment on areas to check out and hospitals that value the "team" approach to patient care? I am used to a Magnet hospital environment in Denver- and I am not impressed with the value of the RN in Vegas! Thanks for your time!

I used to live in Austin. I worked at Brackenridge. Austin is a nice place to live! It's a college town, lots of liberals. There are lots of hospitals hiring. Try St.David's, Seton, (St.David's and Seton have many locations), Brackenridge, CHOA (Childrens Hospital Of Austin), Heart Hospital of Austin.

I am jealous. Austin is awesome. Seton and Brackenridge are both Magnets, I think. You will have lots of opportunities to choose from

Default Austin and family oriented?
Austin is a great city, but if you want good schools, family oriented atmospher, try the burbs like Georgetown (www.georgetownhealthcare.org) or RoundRock (www.stdavids.org). Nice towns, just north of Austin. Gtown has surgical openings now according to their website.
Welcome to Central Texas....

I agree with living in the burbs which pretty much all run together. It really is difficult to tell where Austin turns in to Pfleugerville which turns into Round Rock. Rent/Housing costs are much more economical in the outlying areas and they are much more family oriented as far as schools. I don't know if personally I would want to live as far out as Georgetown, too far from the city. Austin is wonderful though. The weather is great and there is always something to do wether you are single or married with kidos.

I live on the RR,P-ville border and currently work in the ER at Heart Hospital. I have about a 30 minuet commute in traffic. We are working on our magnet status. It is a nice place to work, I love my co-workers. WARNING-Just stay away from nursing in the CCU!!!!!!! Our OR stays VERY busy. The largest group of CV surgeons in town prefer (so they say) to do their bypasses at Heart. Like our name says though, we are a one organ hospital , so if you prefer transplants or any other type of surgery check out Seton or Brack (the trauma unit)- both are magnets.
Good Luck!
