Anyone employed at Scott & White in Temple??

I will be starting at the Children's Hospital at S&W. I know that it's a great facility, however, is there any insight into working there as a new grad???

Thanks

Hi there. I may be relocating to TX to work at Scott & White Hospital for their new grad residency program. So far, I have heard nothing but good things about it and that its a very large hospital with a great reputation statewide. I talked to the nurse manager on PICU and she said that they are in need of people. I currently live in upstate NY and am researching the same things you are, as well as places to live. Are you going to be in the new grad program as well? I really don't know much more than that, but I'm interested in what answers are going to come up!

NY??? What brings you to TX, and temple, tx at that??? I will be starting the Peds Internship in Sept. Have you been accepted into a specific internship in June/Sept/Jan??? We should definitely keep in touch and share notes!

Well...I've been thinking for a while about relocating where there is warmer weather. And with the way the job market for new grads is and really wanting to go into pediatrics, I thought this may be a good opportunity. I just got all my info in, but I talked to the nurse manager and she said she would save me a spot for the PICU for September. I'm hoping to go down for an interview soon and check out the area. I have the opportunity to work at Albany Medical Center in the NICU, which would also be great, but when I'm shoveling my car out of 2 foot of snow I'm going to be cursing myself for not moving to Texas. Plus, why not, I'm young and single and feeling very adventurous at this point of my life.

I was thinking about living near Round Rock so that I'm closer to Austin. What is your take on the Temple/Round Rock/Austin area?

If I hear anything else, I'll be sure to let you know! Also, I wont know anyone there so it'd be nice to compare notes!!

Well...be careful what you wish for...it is definitely WARM here...more like HOT!() I was born and raised in a small town outside of Austin, however, I did spend the last 6 years in DFW(dallas/ft worth). The slogan that Austin has developed is 'Keep Austin Weird," if that gives you any indication of what its like to live here. There are beautiful parts and there are ugly parts just as there are in many cities. Hispanic population is large here, which is true of many Texas cities/towns. People in Texas in general are very nice(IMO). If you will be working in Temple, I would suggest living closer to it...maybe Georgetown or Waco or Temple itself. Round Rock is one of my favorite areas here because its not too densely populated and there are tons of new developments. It really depends on what you like when deciding where to live here.

If I was forced to live in any area, I would chose a surrounding city instead of living smack dab in Austin like Manor, Round Rock, Leander, Lago Vista, Georgetown...the list goes on. Waco houses Baylor University, however, there arent really any spectacular things there! Hillsboro, which is on the northern side of Waco(not too far from Temple) is where the Outlet Mall is...but they also just built one in Georgetown which is south of Temple(and closer). I'm probably rambling on and on now...lol...so I will STOP!

Move to Texas and you definitely will not be shoveling snow! If you have a spot waiting on you, take it! You can fill me in on what its like starting out in the PICU(my goal) once you get here!

I don't mind HOT weather at all..think I was meant more for it, I'm always cold LOL. And thanks for all the info...I actually liked your rambling , very informative and its the kind of advice I'm looking for. I'm back and forth about living in Temple vs. Round Rock/Georgetown. But I'm hoping to get a better idea when I visit. Just think I'd rather be closer to Austin for more to do (music/concerts/hiking/biking/random bars etc).

But I do believe the internship will keep us busy for about 5 months or so, so I thought maybe Temple first then make a move after I get settled in? Hmmm...too much to think about!

And if you want to start out on the PICU..all I did was apply online and the nurse manager called me within a few days. After I told her the nurse recruiter said PICU wasn't available, only general Peds, she told me that there actually was a PICU internship for September. So if you want her name & #, I can throw it your way. She was extremely nice on the phone. But I'm guessing you already went on an interview and all ready for that rotation??

Well, thanks again for the info!

Bandaid Re: Anyone employed at Scott & White in Temple??
I think I am going to stick with general peds for now. Although I think PICU is where I belong, a good sound foundation wouldnt hurt. I can always move later!!!
