You do not need to know Spanish. I'm sure it would come in handy, but you definitely do not *have* to have it.

As far as location, if I were a young single female I would key in on Austin first. It is a young, fun town with lots of outdoorsy type stuff to do. I have no idea of rent and such.

In the Dallas/Fort Worth area, rent in a nicer apartment will be about 800-1000.00 a month. A new grad can expect to earn about 21-25.00 per hour + shift and weekend diff and the occasional sign-on bonus.

I agree with carchel2. Austin is a great place for someone young and just starting off. I did the same think 7 years ago and I've never had any regrets. I work at Seton in Austin and it is a great place to work. We are hiring a lot of nurses right now because we are opening a new children's hospital and two big hospitals in the next year. LOL, there alot of spanish people but u dont need to know it. You can get more money if u do, but anywayz I think Houston or Dallas is best. I really dont like Austin, personally actually I hate texas personally, but out of all of them Houston is the biggest. Apartments in houston can go as low as 350, but nice ones are aroung 600-900+. My friends a new grad at Methodist making about 23/hour I think.

Unless you live in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, you can survive just fine without knowing any Spanish.

I'm a single 26 year old female who lives in Fort Worth, which is a city with a population of about 600,000 people. I moved here from California in late 2005. For a city of its size, this place seems to have a small-town ambiance. Nice one-bedroom apartments rent for $500 to $800 per month.

I'm sure I'll offend a lot of people, but you need to know a lot of Texans call Houston the "armpit" of Texas. It is soooooo humid and sticky and traffic into Houston is a mess. The suburbs (Katy, Kingwood) are really nice, especially if you have a family. But as a young single woman I would not set my radar towards there.

Austin is young and hip. Sure, it is HOT, but the recreation there is outstanding.

Ya know, I have to agree with everyone about Austin! I live 45 minutes outside of Houston, so I go there alot, and I've also been to Austin many times. I just think Austin is WONDERFUL for young people, there is sooo much to do there, and San Antonio is only 45 min-1 hour away and it is another wonderful city. I can't speak about the Hospitals there, but I would think you would have many options. Now, Houston is probably the best place if you really want to learn alot, they have some of the top hospitals in the world. If I was 10 years younger, single, with no children, I'd pick AUSTIN in heart beat!! Oh, and don't worry about not speaking Spanish, I don't and have never had a problem. I totally agree with carachel2 on describing Houston! I went there for nursing school thinking it would be the best experience since the Texas Medical Center is the largest medical district in the world. However... I had to transfer back to DFW because I couldn't stand the humidity. DFW's still hot and humid, but not as bad as Houston.

Oh, another thing about Houston... you'll have to deal with hurricane seasons.

Austin is probably preferred, but if you're going interested in L&D and a new grad, you may have harder time finding a job from talking to new grads there. Good luck on your move down south!

I call houston the armpit of Texas! So funny I lived there for ten years. Yuck! Now I live about 35 miles northwest of houston. Still hot and sweaty but not as bad as houston! Austin is definetely a great place for single women to live!
