Relocating to TN

Hey!! I work at the Children's Hospital at Vandy. it is definately a GREAT place to work. I started at Vanderbilt Medical Center on an adult Med-Surg Unit. I applied for the job on the job page off the web site. I will tell you they are a little slow many times between putting the application in and getting an interview and getting hired!

Yes, parking is a huge issue! We have to pay to park, and there are several garages around the two hospitals. It is a good walk from them to the hospital. they also have shuttles that run, as well. Even with all of the parking issues, the Chidren's Hospital is amazing!! I worked as an extern in the Emergency Department for a year before graduating in May and starting the Pediatric Nurse Residency in July (this program is for new grads who want to work Peds). In the PNR program, I have floated through each unit. I can say the entire hospital is great. Any unit you might choose is a good choice. They also have a surgery department and a PACU, so you could work OR at Children's, as well. The adult hospital is a good one, as well, but I am partial to Children's because I love peds.

okay, so now that I have the job now I need to know where to live. I have an 11 year old daughter and we are focusing on the schools. I need to be within 45 minutes of Vanderbilt and I have been told the traffic exists heading in or out at the north part of Nashville.

So far I like Brentwood and Franklin. My husband would like to have more than 5 acres if possible. Any ideas of nice places to live in the Nashville area?

Brentwood is supposed to be very nice! I have a friend who does home care for a doctor in that area and lucked out into renting a studio apartment that is attached to their home. Funny thing is she also is looking to work at Vanderbilt in the near future.

I have no information about Vande but I have always heard it is a great place to work and learn.

I want to welcome you to TN and you are now in GODS country. I think you should look into Rutherford Co for housing esp. if you want land Symrna and Murfreesboro are great little communities and they have great schools well Murfreesboro does, and they are exactly 45 min from Vandy. I start Vandy myself on this coming week have wanted to work there for years and just now going that way. I'll be in Neuro ICU in the Adult Hospital you chose the right hospital let me say. Welcome to Vanderbilt! We are colleagues!! I am an RN in the Pediatric Emergency Department.

Gallatin is a small town outside Nashville. It is 30-45 minutes away from Nashville. There would be opportunity to get land there. Lebanon and Mt. Juliet are 30-45 minutes away, both nice places to live outside Nashville. These are cheaper than Brentwood would be. Brentwood is really nice though! Both Symrna and Murfreesboro are good choices, too. A lot of people drive to Vandy from all around Nashville. As a matter of fact, I drive over an hour from a little town called Lafayette.

Thanks everyone. Well, I bought my one way airline ticket yesterday. I can't turn back now, I land in Nashville November 16th 0830. My first day and Vanderbilt Children's Hospital is the 21st. I am so excited.

I think I am gonna have to spend my days off touring the area. I will highlight all they areas that you guys mentioned.

Hey what about houses on a river or lake? Can you tell me what areas that might be?

Congrats on the Vandy gig! I hope that you enjoy it indeed! I'm a former Vandy nurse myself (9 south from 94-98). Working at Vandy is the only thing I miss about Nashville.

As for places to live, have you considered the Fairview area? It's not far from Franklin or Nashville (Highway 100 from Nashville & Highway 96 from Franklin). It's Williamson County, which means that it's pricey but it's not as pricey as Franklin. More farmland out that way as well. I used to own acreage near Fairview & the area has some very pretty land. The 840 loop has an entrance ramp in the Fairview area which can help decrease commuting time. It's a thought!
