Loewenberg School of nursing- university of memphis

I am applying to the University of Memphis Loewenberg School of Nursing for the spring of 2011. Right now I am taking some pre-requisite courses and by the time I send in my application I will have a GPA of 3.1. The required GPA needed to apply is a 2.7 cumalative. Does anyone who is attending or has applied know what GPA a person needs to be competitive or be pretty sure they will be accepted into the program. I'm very nervous about getting in.

The PP said it best. I'm in my first semester and it is TOUGH. I'm doing pretty good in all of my classes, but the work load (especially in this first semester) is intense and I pretty much study constantly. I have a wonderful clinical group and we've really been able to lean on each other for help. The clinicals are probably the best part...even though the most I've gotten to do is give a bed bath. LOL- it just gets better. For right now, we're only in the hospital every other week with the simulation lab on the days we aren't in the hospital. Nursing school is hard, but I really really love it.

Edited to add- I also have 3 little kids and I've been keeping up fine by going to class and staying on top of the readings. I'm doing better than some of my friends who have no other real commitments.

Thanks so much TenderLoveNCare and hayleyh31 for taking the time to reply. I'm very excited! I'm pretty confident about getting in since I have a GPA WAY above the minimum and I did good on my TEAS. I'm use to studying ALOT because I've had to do a lot in A&P and in the Microbiology class I'm in now (lol ALOT of studying). I was just very curious about the social life. I don't have too much of one now but I wanted to make sure I had at least some time for my family and boyfriend. :)

hi i'm a third semester student in the program and overall i'm pretty pleased with the program. as with anything it has a few kinks but they are continually improving the program! we are some of the most respected of nursing students in the area (and this is coming from nurses and doctors in the hospital). so with that being said there is alot that is expected of you, but nothing that can't be done within reason! the lectures are intense so you will spend a great deal of your time studying(so if you've never had to study or not use to studying get use to it!) and not to sound like a debbie downer(cuz i'm no debbie downer lol) but you will not have much time for socializing and that's just a reality of nursing school! sucks i know but you'll get use to it especially if you like to pass lol. and clinicals rock! at least mine have anyway! every clinical day won't be perfect but as long as you ask for help and learn and grow from it you'll do fine! i guess what i'm trying to say is nursing school is what you make of it. you will have some rough days and even cry a little but as long as you keep a positive attitude and keep your goal(graduation) in perspective you will do great! hope this helps!

Hi!! I have a few questions that maybe someone could take the time out to please answer. I plan on applying for Fall 2012 and I'm certain that I will get in, but I'm just nervous about the program. Could someone tell me how they like the program, how do they handle to load of nursing school, and explain the clinicals to me. I think that I'm most nervous about the clinicals overall. I hear that there won't be much time for socializing an what not but I want to know is there a LITTLE time for that. I'm pretty good at time management and everything though. Overall I just want to know someone's overall experience in the program. Thanks in advance!

I am now 4th semester at Loewenberg (meaning I have one semester left until I graduate). The first semester was quite chaotic and then everything leveled out quite a bit until this semester, which has been a truly terrible experience. I don't want to get in to too much detail, but I will say that politics are very important at Loewenberg and you absolutely MUST make friends with the right teachers/professors if you want to do well there. Med Surg 1 is the class that sort of "weeds people out" with only a 50% pass rate. You will take that your second semester. A huge word of advice...do NOT try to do all of the assigned readings...read your ATI book, your powerpoints, and the major charts and tables in the text. I watched a lot of people fail because they tried to do all of the assigned readings, which amounts to about 2000 pages a week (no joke).

Clinicals depend entirely on your teacher. You will be doing into to Med Surg your first semester, which is mostly a bunch of CNA type stuff. Hope for a good clinical instructor.

Best of luck to you!

@melbot Your reply was VERY helpful. I will keep all that you said in mind, especially about the readings and studying because 2000 pages a week is A LOT! Lol. Thanks so much for taking the time out to respond. I really appreciate it.

I would love to have your email. I have a few questions about the Nursing Program for you. I don't know if you know anything about the second degree BSN.

@tenderlovencare i would love to have your email as well. i have a couple of questions about the program.

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for all of your posts. I recently graduated college and am interested in the Accelerated BSN Program. Unfortunately, I have a low GPA (2.64) but have not taken any of the pre requisites. I wanted to know my chances of getting in and how I can improve my application. Also does it matter if I take the pre reqs at Memphis or Southwest? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

WOW! That's good to hear. I had no ideas LSON graduates were overtrained. How so? I'm applying for the accelerated program for the Fall of 2012.

I am applying for Spring 2013 at Lowenberg School of Nursing at the University of Memphis. I could have applied this time, but I didn't get a chance to schedule to take the TEAS before all the spots were full (LOOOONG STORY). I have a 3.56 right now. I have taken all the pre-req's does anyone know if my GPA is good enough to apply and get in or should I use the summer to maybe raise it if possible? Just curious! ANY advice is greatly needed. I will be a transfer student from Dyersburg State Community College. I just want to get into LSON because I know it is a great program! I want the best for my self and career as I'm sure all of you do too!

I applied for the Fall 2012 accelerated program...does anyone know when admission decisions will be sent out? Best of luck to all of you!
