Intro & Options in Middle Tennessee?

U.S.A. Tennessee

Published

Hi everyone! I have several obligatory "newbie" questions. I've been attending Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) part-time, on and off for several years. I've been out of school for two years now (Life got in the way, and all that jazz), but I'm going back in a few weeks (same school) as a Pre-Nursing Major. I'm married and have a one-year-old daughter. She's the light of my life, and my inspiration for becoming a birth professional.

I am now a Birth Doula, Childbirth Educator, and Lactation Educator. My ultimate goal is to become a midwife. I am incredibly passionate about natural childbirth, breastfeeding, and all things related. I've been relatively successful at starting up my own business over the last year and have taught a few natural birthing classes (my own curriculum), as well as had a few doula clients. Originally I wanted to be a CPM, but I believe that no matter what setting I end up working in (home births, birth center, hospital), the education and hands-on skills I learn from Nursing will help me endlessly, as well as to give me better job/financial security.

Anyhow, I'm really paranoid that I won't be accepted into the Nursing program at MTSU, even if I Ace my pre-reqs. I'm thinking about applying to Motlow, and perhaps a few other places as well so I have a better chance of getting in *somewhere*. Ultimately I want to get a MSN in Midwifery, and my options for that are pretty much Vanderbilt and Frontier, unless I move to another state before that time (which is a possibility).

My GPA is not so hot right now because I partied a bit too much when I was younger and took classes that were "for fun" but turned out to be uninteresting to me. I know they look at ACT/SAT score too. My SAT, taken in high school was only a combined 1020. I didn't really study for it, and I didn't care much back then. It was a long time ago. Is it possible to retake it still? Would they even consider it if I did?

Sorry for all the questions! If you've read this far, thank you in advance! :yeah:

Can this be moved to the Tennessee forum, please? I guess that would be a better place to put it.

I graduated from the MTSU program in 2008. They look mainly at your pre-reqs and ACT score...they don't look at your SAT score. It's def a tough program...as is any nursing school. I had a 3.4 GPA and 23 on my ACT going in and got accepted on my first try. I know that when I was there, they were in the process of expanding the school and slowly excepting more and more students. They accepted 52 each semester when I was there but I think they were slowly increasing it to over 100 excepted each semester. Goodluck!
