Does anyone know the starting pay for a new graduate RN of the major hospitals in Nashville? I will graduate with my BSN in May, and was just wondering. :) I heard that starts at 19.50/hr, but I did not apply for the residency so I was wondering specifically about Baptist/St T and Centennial/HCA. Thanks!

Vandy will pay the lowest of all the major hospitals in Nashville. We know since we applied to most of them. Although you will have the best chance of getting hired there since actually prefers hiring new grads. Many of the other hospitals are looking for nurses with hospital experience.

Thanks for your reply! I have heard the same about , I have several friends who were accepted into the Residency program starting at 19.50/hr. I didn't apply since I cannot sign a 2 yr work agreement due to my husband's profession. I am encountering the same dilemma with other hospitals wanting experienced nurses, though I am going to keep trying! :) Thank you for replying.

I work at Centennial... new grads start at 19.74. A friend of mine works full time at the VA and apparently they make the most at base pay. Otherwise all of the others (St. Thomas, Baptist) are about the same as Centennial.

Thanks for your reply Lauren! Very helpful, I didn't know what Centennial paid.

The VA is the high payor, bar none. I cannot afford to leave! :yeah:

You gotta love these guys!

I had clinicals at the VA and loved all my patients, they were so laid back! (Maybe I was just there on a good day?) haha Thanks for your reply!

actually vanderbilt isn't the lowest paying hospital i work there and the new grad nurses make $18.50/hr in some units and the new grad nurses in the oncology unit make $20/hr. i have a friend who works in the cardiac unit at st thomas and the new grads there make $18.50. i work with someone who came from workin 25yrs at st thomas b/c paid more and the shift diffs are more at vandy and vandy pays prn nurses more than st thomas too

Really? Well darn, I just got on at St. Thomas! ;) I will make 20/hr starting, but that's also with the shift diff (I'm working nights). I had a lot of clinical rotations at and liked it (nurses were great, especially on 11 North and 11 South!) Thanks for your reply!

Hate to tell ya Vandy1, I worked there for a decade, that is NO secret, VUMC is the lowest and always drags on raises. VUMCs secrets are the benefits. No other healthcare provider, including the VA, can match VUMCs benefit package (in entirety). VUMC is attached to VU and rides along side the university's benefit package. A lot of employees do not realize how well they do have it, including the health insurance, until they compare around town. The 401k program and PERQs also are impressive

Now, if you do not have children, do not wish to pursue more education yourself and believe that social security is the answer, then by all means, chase that $.50-1.00/hr.

As for me, I have only worked at two places in Nashville, VUMC and the VA. I have never found *any reason* to leave either institution.

BTW, the longer you are in healthcare, the more you will realize, money really has little to do with it...;)

what unit do u work in at st thomas TNGIRL2010?

well that's not what i've heard from nurses who came from st thomas one 5 yrs and the other 25yrs bc of the pay difference and plus i know cause i work there and have friends who work at st thomas. also maybe that .50-1.00 makes a diffence to someone to live off of and to do things they've always wanted to do.
